ITALY’S ECONOMICS
ANXIOUS SITUATION SEEN (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Wednesday. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Chronicle” states that in spite of Signor Mussolini’s optimistic speeches, it has been learned that the economic situation in Italy is causing anxiety. Three large and well-known provincial banks have become bankrupt within a fortnight; the year’s working on the railways is unfavourable; and, in spite of the campaign of propaganda for increased production, the maize harvest has shown a reduction of 25 per cent., rice 9 per cent., and potatoes 26 per cent. NO SEED PROVIDED OWNER LOSES ESTATES LONDON, December 10. Because Prince Pignatelli, a great Sicilian landholder, failed to provide his tenant farmers with seed i the time for sowing, the local Fascist Prefect, according 'to the Rome correspondent of “The Times,” issued a decree depriving him of the management of his estates, which have been handed over to the Provincial Federation of Fascist Agriculturists, who will not only adminster the estates, but will introduce all improvements at the Prince’s expense.
