GUNNER’S SUICIDE

While under detention in the guardroom on a charge of stealing a £1 note, Gunner William Houghton, of the 62nd Battery Royal Artillery, stationed at Topsham Barracks, Exeter, hanged himself with his lanyard. At the inquest at Exeter, the N.C.O. in charge of the guard-room said that Houghton had evidently fastened the lanyard to the fanlight and jumped from a table.

Major Bunker said that Houghton, a native of Widnes, joined the Army last November. He was a very quiet man, and had been assistant cook for the past three months. A doctor said that the charge was likely to have preyed upon him. Death was due to strangulation.

A verdict of “Suicide while of unsound mind” was recorded.
