AIDING THE MIGRANT

RECORD OF FIVE YEARS’ ARDUOUS LABOUR BRITISH ISLES ASSOCIATION Working for the welfare of the immigrant, the British Isles Association, which has laboured quietly in Auckland during the past five years, has given much valuable service of which very little has been heard. The immigrant, whether he be “assisted” or a man of substance, is given all advice sought, and employment, if necessary, is obtained for him. He is introduced into the social and business life of the community and made to feel at home. Realising that the man with capital for investment might easily be mulcted, the association has agents who make a thorough investigation of all propositions placed before immigrants. When necessary the services of a Government valuer have been obtained so that there be no mistake about land that an immigrant might think worth purchasing. The association was founded in 1923 under the patronage of Earl Jellieoe and the late Mr. W. F. Massey. Since then employment has been found for from 250 to 300 men each year and the interviews have averaged about 2,500 a year. The officers of the association work voluntarily and the organisation depends for financial support on small annual subscriptions and such cash donations as may be obtained by energetic collectors.
