D. W. GRIFFITH AGAIN
“DRUMS OF LOVE” D. W. Griffith, the master producer, returns to the producing world with “Drums of Love,” which is now on release in New Zealand. “Drums of Love” is based on the famous classical tragedy, “Paolo and Francesca.” Mary Philbin plays the girl, Lionel Barrymore the middle-aged husband, and Don Alvarado, the younger brother, who, with his handsome looks and polished manners, wins the love of his sister-in-law, and betrays his brother’s love and faith. This picture is set in old Spain. It is beautifully mad®, with elaborate palaces and halls; with great armies of retainers; with uniformed men, and picturesque women. But interesting as are the sets and scenes, it is the passionate and tumultous love story that is running towards its dangerous end that arouses the undivided attention of all who see “Drums of Love.” It is a story that is always tense and completely absorbing; the acting is magnificent especially that of Mary Philbin as the unwilling bride of the deformed and elderly soldier, and of Barrymore, as the husband.
