AWAPUNI NOTES

Late Turf

THIS MORNING’S WORK LADY TRAINER INJURED Press Association PALMERSTON N., Thursday. Excellent conditions prevailed for tx*ack operations at Awapuni this morning. A number of horses were galloped, although activities are still restricted to the local contingent, none of the visitors having yet arrived. The major portion of the work was carried out on number three grass, which was in great order. Ai'chei'ia, after conceding Disrank a start over the early portion, beat his companion home, running three furlongs on the grass in 38. Wyeford and Cold Air finished on terms at the end of half a mile in 53, and Home Made and Atareria drew* clear of Red Bank in the run home at the end of a mile task on the plough, the last seven taking 1.38. Kilorell was going equally as well as Lin Arlington in a close five furlongs on the grass in 1.16, and Miss Field and Lucky Bag finished on terms at the end of five in 1.6, the latter having an advantage in the weights. Kalos finished stronger than Elicit over half a mile in 52 3-5 on the plough. Holus Bolus had the measure of Inflame over half a mile on the grass in 1.4, and Keddar had his head in front of Novar at the end of a mile, thelast seven in 1.33. There was little between Kilmiss and Imperial Spark over a mile on the grass, the last seven taking 1.32. Mister Gamp was given his first gallop since his return to the active ranks, running five on the plough in 1.10 2-5. Locarno beat Peneus over half a mile on the plough in 53 1-5, while Dobbin experienced little difficulty in beating Patearoa over half a mile on the grass in 53. Ciarinda and Hymestrason got through long steady pace work, and Moutoa Fume, Callanmore, Statuary and Vexatious were given light tasks. Miss Maher, the well-known lady trainer, met with a nasty accident yesterday when pursuing a horse round the paddock. The saddle on the horse she was riding slipped round, Miss Maher being thrown heavily, breaking several x*ibs. TROTTING AT EPSOM INJURY TO ETTA COLE PETERWAH AND NAPLAND ARRIVE The promising trotting mare Etta Cole, who was looked upon as likely to secure some of the stake money 7 at the forthcoming Auckland carnival, while returning home from Epsom yesterday received an awkward injury to her stifle. Mr. Doeherty’s trotter was accidentally 7 kicked by a young filly which was accompanying her on the homeward journey. Trainer- Fred Gilchrist lost no time in treating Etta Cole for her injury, but the mare is still very sore, and

tho bone appears to bo badly bruised under the abrasion. Unless Etta Cole makes a speedy recovery, her chances of competing on the first day of the fixture are practically nil, as it is doubtful if she can stand a work-out during tho intervening period. The incident is an unfortunate one for both owner Docherty and trainer Gilchrist, but no pains are being spared in an endeavour to effect a cure that will allow the popular young trotter to start on at least one day during the arnival. First Arrival The first visitor to arrive for the •Christmas carnival is the Gisborne owner-trainer R. Fisken, and his pair of trotters, Peterwah and Napland, are due by steamer this afternoon. The popular Gisbornite is pleased with the manner his candidates have- come through their preparations. Morning Workoff Work on the main training track at Alexandra Park this morning was impossible, the heavy overnight rain making the circuit too soft. The majority jogged on the sand ti'ack, but providing no more rain falls, the caretaker hopes - to have the track ready for operations this afternoon. SOUTH WAIRARAPA TROTS PENALTY EOR DANNY BOY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Danny Boy has been penalised 12yds in the President’s Handicap at the South Wairarapa Trotting Club's meeting, consequent on his win at New Brighton last Saturday.
