Firm to the Close

N.Z. Insurances Improve By "Noon Call” LITTLE interest was taken in the calls on Change this morning. Brokers mostly attended as a part of the ordinary routine, their thoughts being centred on clearing up and closing down for the holidays. The ’Change closes for the year to-night.

The market for most of the more popular securities closed in good tone, with the general trend continuing upward. Banks were very firm. Insurnces remain in good demand, the feature of the section being the recovery of New Zealands from sales early last week at 45s 6d to see buyers in at tfis fid, and sellers asking 475. South British were dealt with last evening at fi4a 9d. More attention is being paid to coals. Pukemiros are firmly held with sellers now asking 695. Hikurangis continue neglected with sellers’ quotations unsupported. Renowns saw* further business yesterday afternoon at 15s. It is understood that the flotation of the new Waikato company, mentioned last month, will be proceeded with immediately after the holidays.

In breweries, New Zealands strengthened in the South yesterday to see business as high as 57s lOd. The scrip was sought in Auckland this morning at 565, no sellers. A speculative investment that always makes interesting watching is Taranaki Oils. News from the Morere bore that a strong flow’ of gas is starting to come through has been reflected on 'Change by a decided firmness in the market for the scrip. Sales w-»re made yesterday afternoon at 5s 6d and sellers asked 6s this morning. Business yesterday afternoon.—South British Insurance, 64s 9d; Taranaki Oils, 5s 6d; Renown Collieries, 15s. Business this morning.—Kaula Kampar Tin. 13s 10£d; Mount Lyell Mining, 38s 9d.
