A TRYING YEAR
RELIEVING DISTRESS IN CITY PRAISE FOR THE WORKERS “It has been a very trying year and the social organisations which hav been helping to relieve the hardship deserve every credit,” said the cnairman of the Hospital Board, Mr. William Wallace, at a meeting yesterday. He said that special praise was dus to the Ladies* Hospital Auxiliary and the women of Jewish organisations. The Hospital Board, too, was particularly grateful to the waterside workers, who for the lajst 10 or 12 years had visited the hospital, distributing gifts and comforts to the patients with money raised by a levy on their wages. "The public of Auckland docs not know what a great work these men are performing,” said Mr. Wallace. “Mr. A. R. Blackson, who organistthe visits every Sunday, is a hen* who never tires of doing good. V. should take our hats off to the waterside workers.” Concert parties and those who bad brought afternoon teas to the hospital were also praised. Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., also congratulated the Hospital Relief Committee and the social organisations It was a magnificent work, and how Mr. A. H. Jones, the officer in char?* of hospital relief, got through his ardous duties was more than he cou’d imagine. Mr. Savage also paid a high tribute to the conscientious attention given by Mr. Wallace to everythinthat pertained to the welfare patients and those who had a cl ini on the relief funds.
