AUCKLAND TROTS
trainers preparing keen WORK AT EPSOM affairs at otahuhu Epsom track was in fins order yesterday for operations, and several mentors made the most of the 'oportunity afforded to g.ve their -barges strong work, without any attempt at record breaking, vs usual, J. Shaw, W. Plead and C. r>*L«?e were the early birds, and the ; mer opened proceedings by distching Jewel Pointer and Jackie uidubon over a 12-furlong course. The ip candidate conceded his stable.ite several lengths* start, and pacing n flue style had Jackb* Audubon’s mea„re at the end of nine furlongs, and finished well clear of the ex-South-n_ r Jewel Pointer’s effort was a **. .Uledly pleasing one, and Auckland’s •little wonder” has ireshened up aprpciably as the result of it brief reNot Right Yet jilbbon wood’s Last and Native prince were companions in a strong work-out over a similar distance, the u tter doing his work w ith relish, and his display was in marked contrast to that of his associate. The grey did well on the straight runs, but on the turns he repeated his ‘'bubbling” antics. spoiling what might otherwise haV e been a good exhibition. Hard Track No Use to Raima Long steady work was apportioned Raima, and W. Head’s trotter is still showing the effects of his injured leg, although the limb has made a good rerovery. Hard tracks do not suit the sturdy little square-gaiter, and it looks as if his trainer will lind it difTi - , ult to get any money with him till the sting is out of the ground. The Two Blacks The pair of black pacers in J. Shaw'® stable, Bingen King and Warplane, hopped away for sound work at the ten-furlong disc, but after going a few furlongs Bingen King broke into a gallop, and his youthful driver could not get him to settle down correctly for a while. Warplane went along at a fair pace and finished the essay alone. The Shrew Doing Wei!
The Shrew, unhoppled, worked several circuits strongly, being joined six furlongs from home by Bingen King, who this time was in the right mood to do his work. They came home together over the final half in attractive fashion, the honours being however with Bill Head’s mare. After the workout on the solid track, the Hastings pacer walked gingerly on one foot, from which recently an ugly corn had been removed. Except for this trouble The Shrew is doing well. Rowe Cup Candidate O.K. Tiger Salve, who has never looked better, was given an interesting task over the Rowe Cup distance, and while the pressure was not fully applied, C. G. Lee’s trotter acquitted himself most creditably. The same trainer then exercised * Nelson Billon at a sound clip, and the little pacer revelled in his task and appeared anxious to increase the pace. Both “Togo’s** charges are in excellent spirits. Ted Sandal to the Fore
Golden Hope (C. G. Lee) and Margaret Wallace (E. E. Sandal) commenced together from the mile and ahalf flag, and were on terms for three parts of the journey, where Margaret Wallace increased the speed and kept her companion busy. In the run to the box Ted Sandal’s mare did best, and the final half mile was cut out at a warm bat. Margaret is improving with each essay, but like many more Epsom-trained candidates cannot get a run till the country circuit reopens. Billy Carbine Improving
Billy Carbine (G. Robertson) and Etta Cole (F. Gilchrist) were comrades in a bout over two miles, which was executed at a solid pace throughout. Both square-gaiters gave a fine exposition of trotting, and Robertson’s charge, who usually finds twelve furlongs far enough, created a surprise by bilging <->n the extra distance in good fashion. Etta Cole also gave” the impression that she will run out a twomile journey.
Local Cup Favourite The local Cup favourite. Gold Jacket, was prepared for action, and stepixM away alone from the two-mile peg. When the black pacer had traversed two circuits, L. McMahon asked his charge for a little more, and he responded in a manner that showed a keenless to race to the post. However • ;e was restrained, and without any undue exertion. Gold Jacket got to the *nd of the journey in time that proved hie work-oyt a strojig one. WORK AT MANGERE After witnessing the main work a t Epsom yesterday, “Abaydos” paid a visit to Otahuhu, where, despite the small number of horses • n work for the Auckland meeting, some interesting displays were witnessed. The iong grass had been cut off the course proper, and the fi_ ay tra ck well harrowed, making the circuits much better for fast work. The principal essay was that beWeen Laplander (S. Grant), Tony ictor (C. Jones), Bawldy Locanda Jr* Boe) and Gold Sovereign (T. *oe), the quartet electing to spin \er two miles on the grass. With a nuie traversed in good fashion.
