WANGANUI TRIALS

MASK’S MILE GALLOP (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Tuesday. This morning was ideal for training work on the Wanganui tracks, which are in good order after last week’s rain. Number one track was not available, fast work being done on number two. Mask and Star Area had lightweights in the saddle when they set out for a task that was to serve as one of Mask’s winding-up gallops for the Auckland Cup. They set off at a good pace from the mile and a-quarter post and putting on speed from the mile they ran the first half in 52 2-5, and the six in a tick under 1.21, the mile being covered in 1.49, with Mask held back all the way in an endeavour to keep with hfs companion, being a couple of lengths ahead at the finish. Striking out freely in a circuit on the same track, Ceremony was sprinted over the last quarter of task, moving well. He promises to be in a position to give a good account of himself when he takes on the other crack juveniles at Ellerslie. Lysander Coming Back Also with, a light-weight up, Lysander slipped over five furlongs, taking 25 2-5 for the first two, 37 2-5 for three and 1.2 4-5 for the journey. He looks fit to undertake a strenuous programme at Ellerslie during the next fortnight, and may repeat his three-year-old form. Alloy and Praeda hopped off in that order from the four-furlong post, but the latter was soon in front and stayed there till the post was reached, the time, 52, not being of the sensational order.

Six furlongs was to have been the task undertaken by The Warden, Cobham and War flame, but the trio went off (to use an expression of one of the track watchers) “like a string of sausages.” The Warden was the leader throughout and fineshed well clear of Warflame, who beat Cobham by over a length. The Warden’s time for five furlongs was 1.5, but it was an unsatisfactory gallop altogether. The Warden will race at New Plymouth, while Cobham will do the Awapuni and Marton trip.
