TURF NOTES

r The Cup * i The Auckland Cup is to be run at [ | Ellerslie next Wednesday. \ The Racehorse Limited [ A special horse train leaves Welllington to-day for Ellerslie, and will run to express schedule About 60 horses will be aboard. The train is ' i expected at Ellerslie early to-morrow ; j morning - . . Good Fields All Round The acceptances posted last night I show that good fields will be seen ’ i out at Manawatu. Waipukurau ana Marion fixtures during the holidays. Veteran In Work ■ | The veteran galloper. Listening j Post, continues to train on with F. ' W. Ellis's team, and the son of Solferino may be tried out over the little sticks at the Wyndham R.C. fixiure tu see if he is worth persevering with as a jumper, writes “Sir Modred.” As he is a gelding of marked determination. Listening Post would be gauged a<s a valuable hurdler if he could be trained on to survive a solid preparation. Flicker Beaten For interference to Lady Shot in the 14.2 Handicap at Ascot (Sydney! last week. K. Bracken was suspended for three months. Bracken rode j Flicker, who deprived Lady Shot of favouritism, but his mount could i finish only third. Bracken had been | engaged to ride Cyron in the first ! division of the Ascot Handicap, and ! his name was posted. But his susj pension lost him the mount, which i was then given to A. V. Heterick. A First Foal By winning the Kiritaki Handicap | at Woodville on Thursday, Wyeford must have occasioned some surprise, • as he was opposed by a fairly strong ! field, his previous best being to finish third to Delude and Shot Silk the j previous afternoon in the Second Division of the Trial Plate. He is a four-year-old gelding by Warplane— Spring Tide, and is the first foal of his dam. who was sired by that highclass horse of times gone by, Autumnus. her dam being Ebb Tide, who is chock-full of old-fashioned ; strains, as among her ancestors occur the names of Westmere. Natatator. Hippicampus and Ravenworth. Toxeuma’s Form • Notwithstanding that Toxeuma failed j to return a dividend in the Gothard . Memorial at Woodville, it has to be . allowed that he put up a fair perform - i ance, as he was giving the winner, Kil- | miss, a ■tone and five years, and was j allowing the runner-up, Royal Game. | five pounds and a couple of years. Had j the event been run for under weight-for-age conditions Kilmiss would have had to allow Toxeuma twelve pounds. , while he would have been in receipt of j 17 pounds from Royal Game. On those! | grounds the prospects of Toxeuma. in j the Great Northern Derby, have not suffered by his efforts at Woodville. !

A Strong Team One of the biggest teams io ra.e at the Ellerslie carnival is that under the direction of G. Paul. The Te Awamutu owner-trainer made an appearance at Ellerslie this morning, the i horses under his charge numbering six, j viz.. Aussie, Awarere, Papatu, Lord j Abbey, Just Nell and Rose Mint. Takapuna Again Next Month The summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club has been fixed for Saturday and Tuesday (Anniversary Day), January 26 and 29. Nomina - ; tions for all handicap events and final j payments for the Wynyard Plate close j at the club’s office at 5 p.m. on Friday, i January 11. Thames J.C. Entries Nominations for all events to be run at the Thames Jockey Club's meeting close at 5 p.m. next Friday. The same may be lodged either with the secretary, Mr. A. C. Rae, Thames, or with Mr. F. D. McVay, secretary, Takapuna •Jockey Club. Shortland Street, Auckland. Going South The Te Rapa apprentice jockey, p. Brady, will confine his services to the Taranaki fixture during the holiday period, and at present his mounts inj elude Wenday and Glen Star. K. Gill I will also be riding at this meeting. Riding At New Plymouth Two Ellerslie horsemen, G. Holland j and L. Dulieu, intend to be riding at I the Taranaki meeting next week. The • former will pilot, among others, Horoj mea. Dulieu will ride Abbot’s Delight j in his engagements, and also Archieval. Desert Glow’s Pilot One of the proved stayers in the Auckland Cup is Desert Glow, and the Te Awamutu-trained gelding has raced so well this season that he is sure to be nibbled at for the big two-mile contest. He is to be ridden by the Waikato apprentice, O. Mclnally, who will be having his first ride in an Auckland Cup. For the Coast

Trainer G. Laing intended to take Double Mint and Lucklaine to the West Coast for the holiday racing there, as soon as he could make arrangements, but, having found himself unable to go, he has leased his own horse, Double Mint, to Mr. L. Bloom, the owner of Lucklaine. As soon as a boat is available, the horses will be shipped to the Coast. *

A Useful Team S. G. Lindsay, the Avondale trainer, has not a very strong team in work just now, and he will go further afield than Ellerslie to reap a reward. He will leave shortly for New Plymouth to enable him to be in attendance at the Taranaki meeting, as the following members of his team are due to meet an engagement there on Boxing Day: Viburnum, Fancy Boy, Partial Eclipse, Alonsoa and Owairaka. It .is understood that C. Goulsboro’ will do the riding il the weights suit. Fop Taranaki

Ellerslie Trainer H. Hastedt will leave for New Plymouth on Saturday with Abbot's Delight, who will race in hurdle events at the Taranaki meeting. Just a newcomer to hurdling. Abbot’s Delight has shown in schooling essays that he has the ability to make an accomplished jumper, and. although by no means competent as yet, a little experience should see him able to hold his own in this department. A Derby Fancy

The failure of Prodice in the Te Awamutu Cup last Saturday, and the fact that she is causing her trainer some concern at present, will, no doubt influence backers toward Perception for the Great Northern Derby, and it is likely that he will be one of the favourites, if not the actual favourite, on Derby Day. There was nothing outstanding in Perception’s gallop with Corinax yesterday morning—that is, if you take it from the time point of view—but he did it rather pleasingly. Providing he runs a good race in the Christmas Handicap on Boxing Day he may see a short price in the classic.

Waipa Club’s Christmas Gift The sum paid to the Government in the form of taxation in connection with the Waipa Racing Club’s recent meeting at Te Awamutu amounted to £1,783 3s Sd, made up as follows: Totalizator tax, <£599 15s; dividend tax, £1,079 14s; stakes tax, £56; amusement tax, £47 17s Bd. Silvermine, with Llanore for a companion, set out from the seven-furlong post, tunning to the three (a half-mile) in ".2 3-ssec, says the “Star.” Silvernine led all the way, and finished well. Vivo and Benzora jumped off from the mx furlongs post. Benzora was pulled off after going half a mile. Vivo • finished her six furlongs in lmin 22sec. . The two hurdlers San Fera and Glen- ' gariff galloped seven furlongs in lmin j3B 4-ssec. Glengariff finished a couple : of lengths in front. Bright Glow was ' not galloped fast, but did useful pace work on the sand. Calapat and Tenaore did a good half-mile in 51%sec, Calapat being a shade in front at the finish. Airtight, Paitonu and Gasnapper provided an interesting gallop, : going six furlongs. Airtight and Paii tonu made the running until well up the straight, when Gasnapper put in a claim, and, finishing well, passed the post in front of the other pair. The time was very fair, lmin 21sec, the first furlong taking 14sec. Richfield got the advantage of the jump-off and led Egeria and Corwen went over three furlongs in 38£sec.
