CITY COUNCIL GRANT PRESERVATION OF WAIPOUA At yesterday’s meeting of the Auckland Institute and Museum Council satisfaction was expressed at the action of the Auckland City Council in making a further grant of £I,OOO to enable the continuance of the work. The meeting discussed the annoyance caused the curator and his staff, and the risks involved, by visitors to the Domain freely entering the uncompleted interior of the building. The curator. Mr. Gilbert Archey, was empowered to prohibit the entry of unauthorised persons. A committee which has been investigating the Waipoua kauri forest reserve, reported to the meeting, expressing concern at the roading of the area for settlement purposes and emphasising the need of adequate measures to preserve the forest. As this was a State forest reserve it should be roaded only for forestry communication purposes and not for settlement. The road already constructed through the reserve exposed it to a serious fire risk and opened the way to tourists. It was agreed to make further representations to the Government.
