AT THE SIGN OF THE PENNANT

OUT OF THE LOCKER The 22-foot mullet-boat enus was the object of some interest at Awaroa. [ Under a mass of canvas the Viking i made a fast passage down to Awaroa. ! She later disappeared toward Cowes Bay. The following additional handicaps Iha Vo been declared for the annual ocean race to Russell; Keel Yachts. —Windward, 4.35. Centreboard Boats. —Winifred, 4h. Yachtsmen are remarking that the pohutukawa, or more familiarly known as the Christmas tree, is very late this year. Novelty racing events by the latest in sailing craft —canvas canoes at Bevonport, is billed for this week-end. The canoes are fitted with a centreboard and carry quite a big sail; they make a good pace and tlie owners take great pride in their boats. * * * Devonport boat-owners are feeling very keenly the loss of landing facilities in Torpedo Bay since the Harbour Board pulled down Buder’s Wharf. Efforts were made to induce the board to spare the wharf, or part of it, so that launphes and yachts could have easy landing conditions. Tfie board, however, was adamant. It built a gridiron in place of the wharf, and this has been much appreciated. Boatmen are now to raise money to erect a small jetty opposite the Yacht Club’s pavilion.
