SUCCESSFUL COLLEGE
PROGRESS OF ST. CUTHBERT’S CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS Only 14 years Have elapsed since, with the sanction and good wishes of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. St. Cuthbert's College was established, and yet to-day it has the largest roll of any such college in the Dominion. The speech of Mr. J. Robertson, chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Cuthbert’s College, at the annual prize-giving at the College this afternoon, is indicative of the success of the school. Mr. Robertson mentioned that to date the college had expended no less a sum than £62,000. In addition to reducing substantially debentures. it has also contributed largely to church and social work in the community. From this it would be rightly concluded that the college was governed on sound lines and was favourably and widely known throughout Xew Zealand. In congratulating the successful scholars, the chairman also congratulated the parents, for, he said, the success of the students was traceable in most instances to the interest displayed by the parents. With the principal he hoped, however, that parents would not shirk their responsibility to their children by allowing them to determine the period of their school days. During the year the college had greatly benefited from the visits of Dr. Gilmore, late president of the Adelaide Girls’ College, Rev. James Aitken, M.A., and the Right Rev. W. Hewitson. 8.A., who had given very instructive addresses to the scholars. RELIGIOUS FOUNDATION
Referring to scriptural instruction, Mr. Robertson said that this should permeate the whole school, so that should the question be asked, ‘’Where in your timetable do you teach religion?” they could reply in the words of a veteran schoolmaster, “We teach it in arithmetic by accuracy. We teach it in language by learning to say what we wean. We teach it in history by humanity. We teach it in geography by breadth of mind. We teach it in handcraft by thoroughness. We teach it in the playground by fair play. We teach it by kindness to animals, by courtesy to servants, by good manners to one another, and by truthfulness in all things.”
The high standard attained by the college, was, he said, largely due to tile marked organising and administrative ability of their principal, Miss Clouston. From time to time members of the teaching staff had made trips abroad, and this method of increasing experience was approved by tho board wherever possible. Mr. Robertson also referred to the K£ S T> nCe ,° L T the Moderator Designate, t Je G- I l udd ' and extended to him the best wishes of the college for a happy and successful term.
