NO DECISION YET ABOUT MOTUIHI
HOPE ENTERTAINED THAT ISLAND WILL BE OPEN FOR HOLIDAYS Whether Motuihi Island will be opened to the public during the holidays still remains in question. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, hopes that either Dr. Reakes, of the Agricultural Department, or a Wellington official, will visit Auckland this week and finalise arrangements, but neither the Health nor the Agricultural Departments. which are interested in the island have yet received any advice whatever about allowing .people on the island. In the meantime the Town Hall has been almost besieged by people wanting to picnic on the island, even moonlight picnickers seeking permits. There have been numerous applications for the possible position of caretaker, and someone with an eye to business lias sought permission to build a kiosk. In fact, Auckland is extremely keen about Motuihi as a pleasure resort, and those concerned are hoping that the change of Government is not goir g to affect seriously the undertaking given by the ex-Prime Minister that everything possible would be done to make the island available this summer, particularly during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
