Becky Mine Springs a Big Surprise HARVEST CHILD’S IMPROVEMENT SPORT AT NEW BRIGHTON (Special to THE SUNJ CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The New Brighton Trotting Club concluded its summer meeting to-day in beautiful weather. The track was faster than on Saturday, and there was another good attendance. The totalisator handled £18,747, against £17,151 10s on the corresponding day last year. The total for this meeting was £ 39,244, against £31,081 last year. Innovation Handicap Sonoma Child, £357, Pet Locanda, £272, and Dilnon, £220, were best backed in the Innovation Handicap, Great Abdullah held up the start again with his unruliness, but eventually he was lucky in getting away well With the rest of the limit division. Dilnon was also favoured by the start, and led practically thoughout. Great Abdullah headed the winner round the back, but he fell back at the fur bend, and finished fourth. Sonoma Child paced a good race, but spoiled his chance of winning by tangling 50yds from the post. Ariki Toa should do better at the West Coast fixtures. Harold Leo broke badly shortly after the start, and interfered with Mahara, who came down. After, the race the judicial committee met to inquire into the running of Sonoma Child as compared with his running in the Improvers’ Handicap on Saturday. It was decided to accept the owner’s explanation. Shirley Handicap Molly Molloy wound up a sound favourite for the Shirley "Handicap, the trotters’ two-mile race, with £370 10s, Nancy Bingen, £275, and Koro Peter, £214, being best backed of the others. It was not an exciting race, All Peters went away well, and going round for the last time he set out after Molly Molloy, who had taken command at the eleven-furlong peg. These two had the finish to themselves, All Peters strolling home four lengths in front of Molly Molloy, who was a similar distance in front of St. Petrox, with the remainder well strung out. Repute, Accumulator, Kyra, Lady Fan, and Trampcrisp all lost their chances through making mistakes at the start. Waimairi Handicap There was most support for Harvest Child in the Waimairi Handicap, Mr. R. Ward’s gelding carrying £619. Then came Shadowland, £561, and Invader. £395. Harvest Child scored a cleancut victory. He moved off well, and was never far away from the leaders. Kotuku Jack held command from Warepa, Shadowland, Rebel, Harvest Child, and William the Great:, with a round to go. The leader was still there into the straight, closely attended by Harvest Child, Shadowland, and William the Great, but Harvest outstayed the opposition. Kotuku Jack was again unlucky in suffering defeat after running one of his best races to date. Shadowland lost ground across the top, but he came again in the straight, and finished a good third. Ariki and Invader broke up at the start, while Sarella tangled at the first bend, and interfered with Sunfish. Rebel broke about three furlongs from home. Sectional times: Half-mile. 1.13: mile, 2.21; mile and a-half, 3.30; full distance, 4.85 2-5.
; Summer Handicap Baron Bingen was declared for by tho public in the Summer Handicap. He carried £266, and then came Audrey Dillon, £2lB, and the Kangaloon— Vikota bracket, £lB4. An excellent finish was provided by the pla.ced horses, a neck and two heads separating the first four. Connie Dillon was leading until the stands were reached, whero she broke and fell back. Audey Dillon drew away from the field in the back lane, but Becky Mine, Avonwood, and Baron Bingen came fast at the home turn. All these pacers came into the straight together, and a dingdong tussle ensued over the last furlong. Becky Mine got up on the post to beat Avonwood by a neck, with Audrey Dillon and Baron Bingen heads away. Becky Mine returned a good price to her supporters. She is a sister to Sahib, and is owned and trained by H. Frost at New Brighton. Avon Handicap Lord Bingen was in most demand for the Avon Handicap, carrying £493. Wliito Sun had support to the extent of £405, and Arran Chief £371. When tho start was declared, Great Triumph and White Sun were slow to move. The former never settled, but White Sun made up his lost ground quickly, and went after Direct Tod, Lord Bingen, and Milo Minto, but when W. J. Tomkinson tried to get White Sun chrough on tho rails past Lord Bingen he failed, and was obliged to fall back and come on outside. The winner and Arran Chief fought out a stirring finish, half a length separating the pair Milo Minto has been a consistent performer this season since he won a mile saddle event at the Methven meeting. New Brighton Trot Happy Rosa was a hot favourite for the New Brighton Trotting Handicap, with £505, Sarsparilla, £3OO, being second favourite,'and Nourmahal, £293, next favourite. It was a good contest, in which all honours were with the winner, Sarsparilla. The Ballin horse put in three breaks on the journey, but at the bend for home he commenced to trot faultlessly, and he outstayed the others over the last bit. Randolph trotted a good race, but a bad break at a critical stage ruined whatever chance | he had. Prominent early from an exj cellent start were Marvin Junior. Young Carbine, and Randolph, but the first named failed to stay the distance after opening up a big gap round the back the last time. Our Lady, Wild Hebe, and Nourmahal did best of the others. Dash Handicap The Dundas Boy—Machine Gun bracket was the choice of backers for the Dash* Handicap. They carried £751 Jolly Chimes £328, and the Avenger— Salent bracket £321. Another splendid finish resulted, this time the verdict being half a head in favour of the winner, Granite City, whose success was long overdue. He was in third berth going round the back, but once into the straight lie and Sahib came away to provide excitement. Firelight, who finished third, paced a level ce, while Dundas Boy, Jolly Chimes, and Firpo were all close up to the Matchlight gelding at the finish. Farewell Handicap Loburn. £648, Lulu Lad, £557 and Alvira, £361, were best backed in the Farewell Handicap. Loburn made no race of this event. He was second out at the start, and followed Star Wilkes for half a mile, with Audience the nearest of the others. Granite City threatened danger for a while but in the run home Loburn won hv six lengths from Granite City, who was four lengths ahead of Lulu Lad foil lowed by Brutus, Alvira, and ’ Star Wilkes.
