To mark j the occasion, members of the class preI sented Madame Baird with a handsome Benares brass bowl, beau*ifuly chased ' and enamelled, also a large bouquet 'j composed of sweet peas with pink and , mauve stocks. In reply, Madame i Baird wished to heartily congratulate the members on the striking progress made during the short year in which the operatic class had been in opera- ! tion. She was very much looking for- ! ward to their recommencement next March, when the new season opens.

BAND QUEEN CARNIVAL DANCt AT DEVONPORT Miss Connie Porter, queen candidate nominated by the Band Committee of the Devonport United Band Queen Carnival, was guest of honour last evening at a Non-Stop Dance in the Parish Hall. The music was supplied by two dance bands, Harry Bolton’s Devonians and Stacey’s Society Orchestra. Continuous dancing was varied by novelty effects, streamer and Monte Carlo waltzes. During the evening the other two queen candidates, Miss Peggy Seagar, Navy candidate, and Miss Rua McGregor, Ferry candidate, were introduced to those present. The committee controlling the function was: Mrs. Elder, Mrs. I. E. Martin, Mrs. Taylor. Mrs. G. Sinton, Mrs. M. Sinton, Mrs. Lee, Airs. Evans. Among the dancers were: Miss Connie Porter, in an orange twotoned frock. Miss Peggy Seagar, leaf green frock with white trimmings. Miss Rua McGregor, forest green striped silk frock.
