JACKAL BOASTS 400 KILLS IN ONE YEAR

HAVOC AMONG SHEEP There is believed to be one jackal only In the whole Riversdale area south of the Langeberge (Suoth Africa), but he has accounted for over -100 sheep in the last year, during which he has evaded the ordinary snares and eight packs of hounds stationed at various points. Farmers describe him as a really old veteran, for he has ceased to kill his prey first, contenting himself with morsels out of the live sheep (says the “Cape Times”). The reason for the ineffectiveness of the hounds is that they track the jackal over several miles, but are overcome with the heat long before the jackal is sighted.

The whole district is alive to the movements of this marauder, who has more kills to his credit than any of his kind before. In the Karoo area of this district the jackal abounds but instinctively he shrinks from crossing the mountains except -when made desperate bj’ drought. The Garcia s Pass is sometimes an inlet for him, but an unremiting watch is kept a. Jhis point. Riversdale district. south of the Langeberge. is one of the tew areas where the jackal has been exterminated without the aid of vermin-proof fencing.
