CURE FOR DISCONTENT

“GO TO AUSTRALIA”

MISSIONER’S ADVICE

“If there is any discontented Auckland man, let him go to Australia—he will come back much more contented.”

This is the advice of Major S. Robinson, secretary of the Melanesian Mission, who returned this morning on ttu* Niagara from a two months’ visit to Australia.

Major Robinson lias been inquiring into prices and avenues of supply for the Melanesian mission fields. Tho days of the mission steamer. Southern Cross, are almost over. She hajs been found most expensive to run and other methods of supplying the mission fields will have to be selected. A scheme has been evolved, but no definite decision has been reached. Jt has yet to be placed before the Board of Management of the mission. It is hoped to build two smaller schooners to do the work for the mission and the question has not yet been decided whether these shall be built in Australia or New Zealand. Major Robinson has been locking into this question. He stated this morning that there are many reasons why the boats should be built in New Zealand. Commenting on conditions in Australia. Major Robinson said that after a visit there he saw a surprising number of examples of how not to do things. Those who grumbled at municipal management in Auckland were not aware of the state of thing.: in some parts of Australia.

During his stay in Australia, Major Robinson visited Victoria, Queensland and various parts of New South Wales. Re delivered several lectures on the work of the mission and created quite ■a considerable interest in its activities.
