“SODA-WATER SITTING” FORCED ON REICHSTAG
ATTEMPT TO AVOID A TOO SPIRITED DEBATE ON BUDGET CUnited. I*.A.—/>'y Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and. N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 11 a.m. BERLIN, Sunday. The Reichstag for the first time since 1902 assembled yesterday at 12.5 a.m. for a “soda-water sitting,” owing to President Hindenburg prohibiting alcoholics at the restaurant in order to avoid too spirited a debate on the Parliamenary Budget. The galleries were packed with night revellers anxious to witness the spectacle of compulsory teetotal deputies listening to Finance Minister Hilferding’s demand fox’ an additional £2,500,000 to place Reich officials level with Prussian officials. It is predicted that the 1929 Budget will be the most difficult since 1924, entailing new taxes and curtailment of expenditure.
