Man Jumps Over Grafton Bridge
MAY ESCAPE WITH LIFE SECOND IN FORTNIGHT For the second time in a fortnight a would-be suicide has jumped off Grafton Bridge without being killed outright. About 2.45 this morning, when Mr. John William Lambert was crossing the bridge he heard cries and groans coming up from the gully. He informed the Newton police and they discovered Victor Charles lying injured in the undergrowth below the middle of the bridge. Charles is a married man, living at 19 Richmond Avenue, Grey Lynn. He is 38 years of age and has two children. The police carried him up out of the gully and sent him to hospital, where he was admitted at about 3.30 a.m. His right leg was broken and he was suffering from internal injuries, but it is not thought that he is seriously hurt and hopes are held out for his recovery. The last jump over Grafton Bridge occurred on the morning of Friday, December 7, when a boy aged 16, named Henry Edward Ashby, went over in the early morning. He was so badly hurt that he died in hospital a few days later.
