“TRELAWNEY OF THE WELLS” Norma Shearer in “Trelawney of the Wells,” is the pictorial, attraction at the Grand Theatre. ' The story concerns a young actress who meets and falls in love with the scion of a noble family. Her lover’s uncle, a rigid old aristocrat, frowns at the idea of one of his line marrying “an actress.” and she is asked to live in his home during the period of the engagement. The stifling atmosphere of the house cramps her spirit, and she finally revolts and goes back to the simple camaraderie of her stage friends. Ralph Forbes plays the leading male role, while Owen Moore is seen as the penniless playwright who secretly loves “Rose.” A Polly Moran comedy, “Came the Dawn,” is also being shown. NEW BRITISH FILMS Gainsborough is busier than it has ever been with four big productions in hand at the same time. A most ambitious film is “Lady of the Luke,” featuring Percy Marmont and 33enita Hume. “Balaclava’' —the historical production promises to be one of the most spectacular British film yet seen. Cyril McLaglen. Humberston Wright and Alf Goddard have the principal roles in this film. Carlyle Blackwell, Madeline Carroll, and Miles Manders are starring in “The Crooked Billet.” Graham Cutts is hard at work on “The Return of the Rat,” starring Ivor Novello and Isabel Jeans.
CAPITOL POLA NEGRI AND DENNY ‘ Three Sinners,” Pola Negri's great- j est dramatic picture, will be shown at , the Capitol Theatre again this even- : ing. “Three Sinners” is a dramatic story ! of a woman’s ruined life, brought about i through a husband's indifference. It is European in its setting, and background, but its subject matter has a human appeal for all the world. The second picture is Reginald Penny’s latest farce-comedy. “Good Morning, Judge.” Lenny appears as a wealthy young man who falls in love with a beautiful young giH. who spends her time reforming So as to be near her Lenny turns criminal, and allows himself to be reformed, with surprising results. BRITANNIA SHOWS “RED HEELS” A fascinating story of Parisian life i* revealed in “Red Heels,” to be shown this evening at the Britannia Theatre, i it traces the life of a little dancer in a Montmartre cafe, from the night she attracted the attention of a theatrical manager to her subseciuent “stardom as the idol of Paris, and her marriage to an Englishman who is just a little too “stodgy.” Lili Lamitu makes a fascinating dancer. “The Head Man,” a comedy-drama of small-town American politics, and starring Charlie Murray, is the second feature. “UNCLE TOM’S CABIN” AT EMPIRE “Unci© Tom’s Cabin” is now being shown at the Empire Theatre. The story is told most powerfully, climax following climax until the great finale. Gripping drama enthralls one for the entire two hours of the performance, lightened occasionally with humour, especially the excellent comedy characters of Mona Ray as Topsy, Lucien Littlefield as Lawyer Marks, and Aileen Manning in her role of Aunt Ophelia. The leading roles, Eliza and George, are splendidly portrayed bv Margarita Fischer and Arthur Edmund Carew. George Siegmann gives a graphic portrayal of the wicked Simon Legree; James Lowe is a sympathetic and lovable Uncle Tom.
“Captain Lash,” starring Victor Mi - j Laglen, has been put into production at the Fox West Coast studios, under tindirection of J. G. Blystoue, who directed “Mother Knows Best.” The supporting cast for this picture includes Claire Windsor. Earl Fox, Albert Conti and Clyde Cook.
