Miss Barbara Pierce and Miss Beverley Horrocks, of Auckland, who have been spending a holiday in Sydney, returned by the Niagara to-day. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Thomson, and their daughter, of Sydney and formerly of Auckland, arrived by the Niagara this morning. They will spend the Christmas holidays here and will stay at Mon Desir, Takapuna. Mrs. Nelson Clover, wife of Commander Clover, R.N., arrived from Sydney this morning on the Niagara to join her husband in Auckland. She travelled to Australia from England by the new steamer Orford. Gardner, Tomata Links Road, New Lynn, on Saturday evening. The rooms and balcony were decorated with festoons of balloons and streamers. The health of Miss Miller was proposed by Mr. J. Court, Mr. A. J. Miller replying. Mr. Alexander and Mr. Olsen proposed the health of Mrs. Gardner, senr., and the hostess. Mrs. Miller and Mrs. C .F. Gardner. Items were supplied by Mrs. J r . Parry, Mr. W. BIRTHDAY PARTY MUSIC AND DANCING Streamers and balloons of violet and gold were used with dainty effects, in the Renown Hall, Papatoetoe, on Saturday, when Mr. and Mrs. R. C. W allace/of Kolmar Road. Papatoetoe, entertained a number of relatives and friends, in honour of their son Bruce s birthday. Novelty competitions added gaiety to the function, and after keen contests were won by Shirley Nicholson and Trevor McCauley. Items were contributed by Miss Rita Printer elocutionary, and Mr. Nelson Morey, violin solo. - „ A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Elma Clapliam and Mr. Trevor McCauley. , , . A number of very enjoyable extras were supplied by Mrs. R. G. Ross, Misses Pat. Piggin and Audrey Fitness. Favours, in the form of Christmas crackers, were distributed, and caused much entertainment. The supper tables carried decorations of pink and blue. Mrs. Wallace received the guests wearing a pretty frock of mushroom georgette, with panels of guipure lace. Among those present were: Mrs. L. TENNIS OPENING NGATARINGA CLUB The new pavilion for the Xgataringa Tennis Club at Stanley Bay was formally opened on Saturday at an At Home. The pavilion is equipped with a splendid room for women players, including shower baths and other modern needs. The feminine section of the visitors, many of whom are frequently engaged on entertainment committees in their own districts, were interested in the neatly-arranged kitchen and arrangements for catering. The upper floor of the pavilion is to be used for dancing and social evenings, a facility that has always been lacking in the Bay. GREENHITHE INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING HELD There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Greenhithe Institute last week. Votes of thanks to the retiring president, Mrs. Coulam, and the secretary, Mrs. Newman, were carried. The following committee was elected: Mrs. Tate, president; Mesdames Black, Irwin, Redfern, Nurse Crozier and Miss Porter. Arrangements were made for the January meeting wh«n a demonstration of life-saving will be given by Mrs. Atkin, of Belmont, after wliich a picnic will be held on the lawn at Mrs. Coulam’s home. The programme for next year was discussed and it was decided to ask Mr. Blake to lecture in Greenhithe on town-planning subjects. The results of the gardening competition for children was announced, the prize-winners being Vivien Irwin, 2, and Phyllis Wakely, 2.
