Just Nell was Just Too Green
CAUSED TROUBLE AT TE AWAMUTU THREE HORSES FALL There was an ugly looking smash in the Orakau Hack at Te Awamutu on Saturday, .attended, fortunately,' without very serious results. r JHTE accident happened a furlong and a-half from home, just as the big field of 16 was approaching the straight. Red Day (M. Lee) was seen to come down, and a second later Ossian (A. Dick) and Archileen (S. Tremain) both fell. These horses were running in the middle of the field at the time, and several appeared to gallop over Ossian and Archileen and their riders as they lay on the ground. Dick was quickly on his feet, and then Lee was seen sitting* up, but Tremain remained prostrate, and there were- fears of serious injury to the Ellerslie horseman. The motor ambulance was quickly on the spot, and. Tremain was brought to the casualty room. Aledical examination disclosed that the jockey had sustained concussion and a severe shaking, comparatively slight injuries tb those who witnessed the mix-up. IT. Lee sustained a broken collar-bone. Assuredly jockeys bear charmed lives. Horses, too, for the three that fell appeared to be all right.
It was satisfactory to know that the occurrence was purely accidental, and not caused by foul Dr careless riding. The Judicial Committee at once held an inquiry, and it did not take them long to arrive at a decision. The evidence showed that Just Nell was running about a lot—she was on the outside of the middle bunch—and came over on to Archileen. The latter cannoned on to Ossian and Red Day (who fell), and before Ossian and Archileen could make a recovery they too came down.
There is no doubt that Just Kell is an awkward customer, and more than a handful for a light boy such as the Ellerslie apprentice, J. Day, who was aboard on Saturday. At Takapuna recently the big chestnut mare ran very green too. But Just Kell has pace to burn, and when she steps out on a roomy course and has a strong rider in the saddle, then may be the time when ! she proves what has been written hero to be correct. Even after her escapade on Saturday she finished ! fourth, within a couple of lengths of I the winner. By Nassau from Flying Nell (Quin Abbey—Brown Nell), Just Nell is owned by Air. A. H. Storey, and is trained in the same stable as Aussie and Awarere. ROSEHILL MEETING (LnitecL P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY, Sunday.
