AUSSIE DRESSED K IN HIS BEST

ar & WINS TE AWAMUTU t FLYING It 5 DESERT GLOW’S CUP SUCCESS it | One of the most enjoyable of the 6 many country fixtures on the Auckw land circuit was that staged by the % Waipa Racing Club at Te Awamutu JL ;on Saturday. A glorious day, great J racing, and a fast track made for a W : day s clear sport, with the whole a countryside in attendance. Desert Glow ® repeated his performance of last year At by capturing the Te Awamutu Cup. and 2 Aussie pleased the crowd by coming r home in the sprint. There were two iT surprises, both Patere and Cynthia N. J j paying double figures. f it was satisfactory to find that i* | speculation was brisk, the totalisator 81 j returns showing an increase of £B7B, M the respective figures being £23,990 i and £23,112. Notes on the racing and details of X results follow. Pirongia Hurdles

Speculating on the opening event, the Pirongia Hurdles, was largely confined to three, Ilighflown £29G, Star of the Last £262 and Master Roley £249, carrying the investments. It was a straggling start, Gala Day leading out from Gold Rain and Ilighflown, but passing the stand the last-named had run to the front and was attended by Bracken Abbey, Lady Spalpeen, Lord Abbey, Tinopono and Master Roley. Passing along the back the race developed into a bout between High flown and Gala Day, this pair clearing out, and at the five furlongs had a break of 10 lengths clear from Lady Spalpeen, Star of the East, Lord Abbey and Master Roley. Highflown and Gala Day were still at the head of affairs turning for home, and negotiated the last fence together. Highflown finishing too strongly for his companion, whom he beat by a length and a-quarter. Two lengths further back was Lady Spalpeen. and then followed Star of the East, Lady Cintra, Farndon and Master Roley. Kihikihi Handicap Three in the Kihikihi Handicap reduced the field to half a dozen, the public placing implicit faith in Macroom, who carried £767, as against £537 on Flying Juliet, and £ 507 on Leitrim. Te Koroke carried £277. From a splendid start Macroom went out very fast to lead Takutama. Flying Juliet, Waltzer, and Leitrim, but at the end of three furlongs Flying Juliet had moved up in behind Macroom, T© Koroke being last at this stage. The field bunched crossing the top, there being three lengths between them. Macroom was still in the van as they swung round the turn for home, closely attended by Flying Juliet, Takutama, Waltzer, and Te Koroke. A fine finish eventuated, Flying Juliet finishing with sufficient resolution to gain the verdict by a length from Te Ivoroke, who put in a fine burst over the final stages. Macroom was half a length away third, and then came Takutama, Waltzer, and LeitWaipa Plate Indolent, £576, was a firm first choice for the Waipa Plate, there also being good support for Haviland, £442. Unoco. £270, and Roman Pearl. £lB3. the winner, Patere, only having £lO2 invested on his chances and returning a dividend in the vicinity of a score. Haviland and Patere jumped' out martly at the start but at the end ol a furlong Patere had taken charge, his nearest attendants being Roman Pearl. Arcade, Haviland, Unoco, and Yiolai tion. Passing the half-mile, Patere - till had command from Arcade, Roman I Pearl, Unoco, Dainty Manners, and i Haviland. Unoco and Haviland imI proved their positions crossing the top. while Arcade fell back, that being the only changes as they entered the home stretch. Roman Pearl challenged Patere in the run home, but failed a head to get there, the third horse Unoco, being two lengths further back Princess Rain was fourth, and in ordei came Haviland. Indolent, Dainty Manners. Violation, and Ossian.

Te Awamutu Cup The Desert Glow-Prodice bracket was always first choice with £999. while Mervette carried £928, there being a drop to The Lover £493, with Siaosi, the second horse, having £2SO entrusted on his chances. As they swept past the stand Mervette was making play from Prodice. The Lover, Siaosi, Papatu, Komak and Desert Glow, but at the five-furlong post Mervette was joined by The Lover, this pair being clear of Siaosi. Prodice, Papatu and Desert Glow, with Tidal in the rear. Siaosi gave way to Prodice and Papatu crossing the top. and this was the only change in the order as they swept across the top and into the home stretch. A fine finish was the result, Desert Glow securing a lucky run on the rails, which enabled him to shoot up and beat Siaosi by a neck. There was little separating the next three horses. 1 The Lover being in third place tlireei parts of a length away, followed by | Mervette, Prodice, Papatu, Komak, I Tidal and Transformer, with Eh Timi | tailed off. Paterangi Handicap j Wenday £915 was made a sound favourite for the Paterangi Handicap. Lucy Rose £519 a.nd Boomerday £323 | being the best supported of the rej mainder. Lucy Rose was the quickest [ to find her feet and led out of the straight from Always, Maurea, Ra- | rangi. Scat and Boomerday. There j was practically no change in the positions until crossing the top, where Wenday moved up behind the leaders. Lucy Rose was first to enter the home stretch, with Always and Wenday in hot pursuit, and Scat and Rarangi handy. Half way down the running Wenday threw’ out a strong challenge and although Lucy Rose was tiring perceptibly, she hung on to win by a i head, with Scat half a neck away, | third. Then came Always, Rarangi, ' Maurea and Boomerday. Orakau Handicap I The betting market favoured | Hakanoa £361. Lunette £2lB, Black Maire £242 and Just Nell £173. The start was a ragged one, and Joke Form, who was badly left, took no part in the race. Lunette was the first to show 7 out. being followed by Black Maire, Some Lady, Rose Arch, Quinsilia, Hakanoa and Just Nell. As they 7 ran to the half-mile post Black Maire and Just Nell were together, in front of Some Lady and Lunette, who were racing on terms, with Quinsilia ; and Hakanoa in close attendance. Some Lady was the first to turn for home, with Black Maire almost level, the pair being closely followed by Lunette, Quinsilia and Hakanoa. There was a ding-dong struggle to the post, Lunette doing best to gain the verdict by a neck, with Some Lady a head away third, and Just Nell fourth. Hakanoa. Cvbele. Crown Arch and Quinsilia were next to cross the line. Flying Handicap 1 Backers regarded Nancy Lee as the ; pick of the weights in the Flying Handicap, and when betting had , ceased she was a firm favourite, the i investments on her amounting tc | £BOO. as against £693 on Liaison, and I £4lB on Aussie. The last-namec i was always going like a winner. Frorr an even start Ruffles (on the rails) lec I Aussie. Nancy Lee. King Peg. Marbb i King, Liaison and Joy Germ. King

Peg ran into third berth half a mile j 7 from home, and two furlongs later j on Aussie took charge and led round j i the bend, followed by Marble King, j Joy Germ. Nancy Lee. "Waltzer and 1 Town Bird. Nancy Lee challenged j Aussie in the run to the judge, but | failed to make any impression, the latter scoring comfortably by a length and a-half. Town Bird was two j lengths further back in third place. ; following hi mbeing Master O’Rorke. Liaison. Waltzer and Marble King Ohaupo Handicap Seven contested the concluding race, the Ohaupo Handicap, and, notwithstanding his heavy impost, Awarere was backed as if the result was a foregone conclusion, while there was heavy support for The Lamb, anything outside of this pair at a price. The eventual winner. Cynthia X.. was at a double-figure quotation. Prince Lu, who started on the extreme outside, Awarere and Cynthia X., were in close order ahead of The Lamb and King Lu for the first quarter, where Cynthia N. forged to the front and was first into the straight from King Lu, Awarere, Te Koroke and King Smock. Although King Lu challenged the leader in the straight, the English bred mare held her own over the final stages to register a length victory, with Te Koroke and Awarere together a couple of 'lengths further back, and King Smock and Prince Lu followed. | The Lamb met with interference three furlongs from home and finished last.
