END OF YEAR
GIRLS’ GRAMMAR SCHOOL YESTERDAY’S CEREMONY There was a large number of pupils and parents present at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School yesterday afternoon. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schools Board, presided, and presented the school work prizes. The sports prizes were presented by Mrs. Ward Baker, wife of a member of the board. Professor Thomas said that though a number of people did not believe in prizes, he thought that prizes were good, as they represented a large amount of effort. In her annual report, the headmistress, Miss E. M. Johnston, said the roll had increased to 683 on March 1, an increase of 28 over the previous year. The increase had necessitated a new teacher, and Miss E. J. Stewart was appointed. The most outstanding event of the year was the winning of the Sinclair Scholarship by Betty Archibald. The scholarship had been founded for the study of biological science, tenable for three years at the Auckland University College. Musical items were given by the pupils, and included the school song, two part songs by selected third forms and V. Mod. B, and selected third and fourth forms. Selected forms also gave a solo and chorus from “lolanthe.”
