ROADING IN NORTH

COUNTY AND PUBLIC WORKS CLASH CO-OPERATION NEEDED (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, To-day. At a Whangarei County Council meeting this morning, Mr. L. Webb, the chairman, moved that the council meet the district engineer at the end of each financial year to discuss the allocations for road construction and maintenance. It was stated that the Public Works Department knew what the county was spending from its allocations, but the council knew nothing of the works undertaken by the department. Consequently there was a very unequal distribution of funds throughout the ridings. The council supported the chairman’s motion and also decided to urge an increase in allocation. The council further decided to tarseal the Whangarei-Maungatapere Road, which Cr. Hayward characterised as one of the most important main roads in the district. The Maunue riding is willing to increase its rates by £d in the and will receive support from the county funds for this road, which will be dealt with as adjacent to the borough. Four hundred pounds a year will be allocated from the petrol tax toward the scheme, which is to be completed in three years.
