FINAL TRY-OUTS FOR CHRISTMAS RACING

THE summer carnival of the New Brighton Trotting C! b opens at the seaside rendezvous to-morrow and will* be brought to finality on Monday, and in view of the approach 6 ing Yuletide fixtures in various parts of the Dominion th function is of more than ordinary importance.

With racing at Gore. Ashburton. Westport, South Wairarapa. and Auckland during the Christmas holidays. the form at New Brighton, while the December two-dav carnival is in progress, generally throws some light on the prospects of contestants competing at the seaside, which claim engagements at some of the meetings which come up for decision at the holiday season. While there may not be many competitors taking part at New Brighton that are billed to appear at Alexandra Park, there are a few who. if they showup prominently at the seaside, will come into favour for their Auckland encounters, while admirers of the sport who maintain a keen iterest in the doings of pacers and trotters all over the Dominion, will get a line on several of the runners for their holiday racing. With two exceptions the fields to- ! morrow* are on the laxge side, and | especially in the improvers* classes , quantity is a strong feature, although not much is known regarding the qualifications of the majority of the contestants. Quality, however, is fairly well represented in the other items and the racing should prove interesting. A review of the fields by “Abaydos” follows: Proceedings will commence with an event for improving square-gaiters, the TRIAL HANDICAP, li miles.

The majority of those taking part in the contest figure on the front line, and there may be some hidden treasures in this basket, although backers will probably trust their investments with some of the better known division. Great Applause has been expected to do things for some time, while Blue and Gold will now have a chance to make good last season’s promise. Tot Logan has been expensive to the public and any good should win here. Homeleigh Girl is well spoken of, while Scuttle is one that gave promise early this year of being useful. Of the lot in the next three lines Brandean will probably appeal most, but Accumulator is worthy of more than passing notice. Koro Peter is set a solid task, and Eva Reta may do the best of the rea.r division. Brandean will most likely be favourite, but there will be friends for Tot Huon and the ex-Aucklander Koro Peter. Improvers, of a different type, will again take the field for the second item on the card, the IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP li miles.

Nineteen of the twenty-seven starters will begin off the front, so that the barrier draw will play its part here, while good beginners will be in demand by speculators. The best known of the limit lot are Star Lady, His Lordship, Harold Lee, Jackie Logan, Prince Audo and Danny Boy, and if the latter could be relied upon to hop his frame away at the right moment Drum Withers would probably drive a winner. His Lordship finished .third last March at New Brighton to Free Advice and Baron Bingen in their memorable struggle, while Jackie Logan is a promising pacer. Star Lady is showing promising form and should be just about due. Just behind this lot is Audrey Dillon, a likely sort, while further back Mary Locanda and Pet canda are likely to be troublesome. The latter is a nice pacer, and should Kennerley get a good run, will take a lot of beating. Being on the end and smart beginners will probably cause Jackie Logan and Star Lady to be in most demand. The next item on the card will cause more interest than its predecessors, as the big guns will parade for the principal event, the

The devil’s number colour the card and the issue is a very open one. Firpo has the front to himself, and if he gets away to the music, will give those behind him something to do to head him off. Matagouri is a solid pacer, that is expected to reach higher society, in which case he must have a big say in this argument. Sahib went a good two miles at Christchurch recently, although the final pinch found him just lacking. Warepa and Kotuku Jack will add interest to the race, while Audominion is coming back to form. If Tomkinson has the polish on Shadowland he will prove a tough nut to crack, while Sarella will have a lot or friends, although she has not reproduced her nine efforts of last season so far this year. Of the trio on the next peg, Harvest Child will no doubt receive most support, and he is tlle , best stayers in tlie field. Light should be favourite, while, if he is an absentee, Matagouri and Harvest Child will attract support. A promising contingent will go to the post for the BOWHILL HANDICAP 1J miles
