Prodice and The Te Awamutu Cup
WAIPA FIXTURE TO-MORROW THE last fixture before tlie welter of midsummer meetings is that to be staged at Te Awamutu to-morrow by the Waipa Racing Club, for which large fields will be seen out.
The course cannot be in other than good order, for the turf is such that it will take a lot of rain to make it heavy. The aceptances are excellent, and it looks as if winners are going to be particularly difficult to find. A start is to be made with the 11.45 PIRONGIA HURDLES Of £110; 1£ miles.
Master Roley 9 0 A good many of these can be regarded as probables, notably Lady Cintra, Lady Spalpeen, Star of the East, High flown, Gala Day, Farndon, Tinopono, Master Holey, Kaihoremai, and Lord Abbey, so it will be seen that it is a fairly open race. Highflown and Lady Spalpeen will no doubt carry the money. Next is the 12.30 KIHIKIHI HANDICAP
An even field of nine should make for a very interesting contest, in which Macroom and Leitrim may be seen to advantage. No less than 26 appear in the maiden class event, the 1.15 WAIPA PLATE Of £110; G furlongs. Weight-for-age.
Of tho above crowd, no less than a dozen have cause to be supported, but it is going to be hard to suggest what will be seriously backed without a preliminary knowledge of the barrier positions. Lunette and Haviland are two, however, that promise to come in for fair backing. Tho fourth item on the card is the principal event, the 2.0 TE AWAMUTU CUP
The form of the top-weight of late has been excellent, and small courses do not appear to hinder him. Desert Glow, last year’s winner, is liable to repeat the performance, and he will bo coupled with Prodice, a filly that must possess a glorious show on her Takapuna second-day running. Mint Leaf may be beaten by the course, and Papatu requires to show improvement to get on the winning list. He is on his home track here, and that may make a difference. Siaosi lias gone up for his Taumarunui Cup success, and he, too, will be at home here. Wenday has a light-weight’s chance, and so has The Lover, who is a fine recruit to the open class. Tidal mp.y not be suited by the bends, but if he is handy at the turn for the very short run home he might spring a surprise. Komak lias shown better form of late, and can be regarded as a possibility. Mervette, at lib above the minimum, reads particularly well, and she will count many friends, for her treble success at Te Kuiti was easily obtained, stand an undeniable chance, and he and Wenday will carry a lot of money. A much better field is left in the f . 30 ORAKAU HACK Of £110; 7 furlongs
Of these. Froth blower. Some Ladv, Hakanoa, Mussie, Red Day. Rose Arch. Lunette, Black Maire, and Just Nell have shown sufficient lately to cause their prospects to be seriously considered. The actual first fancies may be Mussie and Just Nell. The open sprint event is the 4.15 FLYING HANDICAP Of £150; 6 furlongs
The top-weight has 71b more than he was beaten into second place with 12 months ago. There are some fair sprinters engaged, including Nancy Lee. Macroom (who would be fancied if reserved for this), Waltzer (on a wet track). Liaison. Town Bird. TakuHowever, it is not at all likely that any horse will oust the Prodice-Desert Glow bracket from favouritism. Eleven figure in the 2.45 PATERANGI HANDICAP Of £120; about 8i furlongs
Of the two top-weights, Wenday will probably be preferred, and then fur-
ther down there are Tidal. Rarangi. Lucy Hose, and Maurea, the field in all being about the poorest on the day. If Tidal is reserved for this, ho must tama, Joy Germ, King Peg, and Marble King. Probably the best-backed pair will be Liaison and Aussie. A line programme concludes h the 5.0 * OHAUPO HANDICAP
This is a fine field, and backers will be in a quandary as to what to out favourite. Awarere, King Lu, r /e Lamb, Cynthia X.. Te Koroke, and Ai'ikitoa are about the best engaged, and of these it would seem as if the two most entitled to support are The Lamb and Arikitoa. The Riders Owing to the majority of horses racing at Waipa on Saturday being trained in tlie Waikato, only a limited number of riding engagements could be gained. These are set out below.: L. Manson.—Transformer. Flying Juliet, King Lu, Waltzer. Quinsilia, and Prince of Orange. C. France. —Pessimist, Cybele, and either Desert Glow or Prodice. S. Bryce.—Tidal. Princess Rain.
