Grand Acre Pays a Big Price

MORE WOODVILLE OUTSIDERS CLEVER SCORES AGAIN The Woodville races were continued to-day in very wet weather, and toward the end of the day the course was a quagmire. The totalisator ' handled £12,413, against £13,623, the imeeting showing a decrease of £1,221. Papatawa Hurdles All 12 runners went to the in the Papatawa Hurdles, in which the runner-up on the opening day, Red ■Dank (£349) was installed a firm favourite from Jen (£132) and Gambler, who were in equal demand. Jen was first away to lead into the straight from v Deluge, Mandate, Gambler, Grand National and Red Bank. Superior jumping enabled Red Bank to hit the front passing the stands, being accompanied by Deluge, with Jen, Grand National, Gambler and Othon close up. Going down the back Red Bank and Deluge were still on terms, with Grand National and Othon in behind, the quartet being well clear of the other runners. Othon was first to land into the straight, but approaching the final fence Grand National assumed the lead, and he jumped erratically the front of Othon. The Awupuni representative then drew away to win by five lengths from Othon, who was a length and a-half clear of Red Bank, the last-named being just in front of Deluge, with Decoy Bird and Fairone next to finish. An inquiry was held into interference by Grand National, but it was considered accidental and as not affecting the result of the race. Novice Plate Curtsey was the sole defection from the Novice Plate, in which the public went strongly for Goodwill (£456) and Kinross (£417), there being a marked drop to Mothplane (£209), with the others paying long prices. Shrewd was smartest to begin from Kinross, Grand Acre, Goodwill and Reflecto, and there was little change right to tho straight entrance. At the distance Kinross promised to be the winner, but Grand Acre wrested the lead and went on to win nicely by half a length from Kinross. Kiriana came with a late run, but just failed to gather up Kinross by a head. Shrewd was fourth, with Disrank. Imperial Fame and'Primax next to finish. Grand Acre paid a remarkable price, there being only 16 tickets on him. Gothard Handicap When the Gothard Memorial Handicap came up for decision Hoylake was again among the defections. * The public displayed a preference for Toxeuma (£417), with Royal Game (£282) and Star Area (£235) next in request, and an excellent dispatch saw tho held move off in line, Doree being taken to the front to pilot the runners going out of the straight, with Royal Game, Star Area and Toxeuma ahead of Kilmiss. Doree was still clear half a mile from liome, where Kilmiss ran up to Toxeuma. and the pair,' in company with Royal C-feme and Star Area, were in line behind Doree at the entrance to the straight. A great race ovr the final pinch saw Kflmiss worry her opponents out of the issue to prevail by a. length from Royal Game, who was a head in front of Toxeuma. Star Area and Huikai were right up. Sixteen contested the Kiritaki Handicap. Veronese, Inflame and Millias headed the betting, but another surprise was forthcoming, when Awapuni headed its fourth successive win for the day with 'Wyeford, who carried but 89 tickets. Veronese and Wyeford were first away, but the favourite almost immediately lost his position. Wyeford leading Inflame, Dry Area and Baskier across the top. There was no change at the straight, and Wyeford was still clear of Inflame lit the distance, where Baskier put in an appearance, but failed to reach Wveford, who won by a length, with three parts of a length separating Baskier from Inflame. Second Thought w.ts fourth, Veronese, Winnington and IMiinmerton being next to finish. Railway Handicap _ A , I >our field was presented in the |||& Railway Handicap, betting being

restricted in consequence. Chelone (£418) was again installed favourite, with equal support for Gascony (£265) and Miss Pat. When the tapes were lifted Lady Ideal led out from Gascony and Chelone, with Maui and Miss Pat bringing up the rear. Crossing the top Gascony went up to Lady Ideal and was first to enter the straight, the King John gelding running a shade wide, but was straightened out to retain his lead. Chelone failed to come on. whereas Miss Pat come fast on the rails, and although she threatened to repeat her first day’s performance Gascony came away again to win by a length, there being a gap of two lengths to Maui. Chelone was an indifferent fourth. Gascony won really well and will be very fit at Christmas time, when he is to contest the classic at Awapuni. Juvenile Handicap Zarene and Acreline declined their engagements in the Juvenile Handicap, in which Clever (£496) was installed a firm favourite, with smaller money for Imperial Guard (£288) and Statuary (£104). Backers of Imperial Guard, however, failed to secure a run for their money, the Valkyrian colt refusing to get into line, and he swung round the wrong way as the tapes were lifted. Cat ilex was the pacemaker from Clever, Statuary and King Hal right into the straight. The lastnamed running a very erratic course thereafter and drifted out of the picture. Clever drew out, with Statuary in pursuit, but the challenger could not get closer than a length to Clever, who thus repeated her first day’s performance. Statuary, who was having his first race, was three lengths clear of painting, with Ben Hur and Catilex next. Gorge Handicap Anolo (£389) was preferred to Kilmezzo (£368) and Teri (£326) in the Gorge Handicap, but the favourite was fated to be again defeated, after having appeared to be a possibility at the turn for home. Teri and Kilmezzo jumped into the lead from Peneus and Mystum, the field being well bunched. Crossing the top Kilmezzo took command, being attended by Teri, Mystum, Anolo and Peneus at the home turn, where Superb King moved forward. However, Kilmezzo was never seriously troubled in the run to the post to win by two lengths, with a similar distance between Superb King and Kick Off, who came with a great burst of speed to head off Anolo. Night Witch was fourth, with Teri a poor fifth. Stewards’ Handicap The Warden made the early running in the Stewards’ Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, and he was followed by Curtsey, Locarno, Aurora Borealis, Delude, Pale Star and Kalos. Curtsey took charge before entering the straight and turned for home ahead of The Warden, Locarno and Kalos. Ridden out, Locarno won by a length, while Kalos lasted just long enough to beat Ngiht Witch by a head for second place. The Warden was a fair fourth, with Delude, Courageous and Jiu Jazz next to finish. Following are the results: Papatawa Hurdles, of £l2O, 1 J miles.— 5 Grand N.'itional. 9.5, P.
