INTERESTING DICKENS RELIC IN AUCKLAND

yTR. FRANK TURNER, of Takapuna, * has in his possession a holograph Dickens letter. It reads as follows: "Mr. Charles Dickens presents his compliments to Mr. Ellis, and begs, on behalf of the gentlemen engaged in the amateur performance at Miss 's Theatre [name undecipherable], to enclose him a cheque for eight guineas. He will be glad to learn that it is a sufficient remuneration to Mr. Ellis for his time and trouble. Devonshire Terrace, York Gate, Regent’s Park. Thirtieth September, 1845.” The letter was given to Mr. Turner by Mrs. Maslin, wife of one of the Gentlemen Pages to the Duchess of

Kent and Queen Victoria. AVlio “Mr. Ellis” was, and what was the “amateur performance” that occasioned the letter, are unknown.
