BIG POULTRY OFFERINGS

PLUMS COMING FORWARD A feature of the Christmas trading, which set in in earnest on the City Markets to-day, was the large offering of poultry. A small number of turkeys came forward and met with keen competition. A good demand was evident for all classes. One selling firm will hold six poultry sales before Christmas, althouglt it recognises that today’s was the most important. Choice cockerels are in short supply and the demand is keen. Heavy hens are meeting with brisk competition. Better quality lighter hens are selling well. The market is flooded with ducks. Prices have fallen considerably under the weight of supplies. Plums have made their appearance in the fruit market. Three varieties are pffering at present, and the inquiry is good. Local apples continue to be dull of sale. Large quantities of hothouse and outdoor tomatoes are selling, but the rates are low. A substantial drop in prices has taken place within the last week. Strawberries are in very large supply. The inquiry is dull. Gooseberries are now at about their cheapest. Pines are meeting with a fair demand. Local apricots are coming on to the markets in poor condition. Green peas, new potatoes, beans, lettuces and cabbages are in heavy supply on the vegetable benches. There is no shortage in any line of vegetables and the demand is brisk. In the small stock market, baconei* pigs are selling at £3 6s to £3 18s: porkers, £2 to £2 10s; slips, to £1 Gs; and weaners, to 12s.
