NIGHT SWIMMING BEGINS

GRAMMAR CLUB’S GOOD CARNIVAL BRIDSON’S BRILLIANCY Auckland’s distance swimming champion, Gordon Bridson, was responsible for a brilliant effort over the first heat of the 220yds handicap in the Grammar Club’s big carnival last evening at the Tepid Baths. 1- rom scratch, Bridson ploughed his vvay past J. Enwright, R. de Loree and N. Noble to cover the difficult distance I* l 2 m 335. Bridson’s time was over 17sec better than those in the second heat and the final, and was only 1 3-s.sec slower than the Dominion salt water record. Bridson did not race in the final. The carnival was the first evening swimming sports of the season. In spite of the bad weather, hundreds were at the baths. The most notable absentee from the competitions was Ena Stockley, New Zealand representative, who was on a visit to the West Coast. Two good handicap men, A. W. Raper, of Ponsonby, and M. S. Withers, of Parnell, were first and second in the inter-club 50yds. The five heats were interesting, but the men on the harder marks, J. Farrell, Auckland sprint champion, L. Fairgray, J. Enwright, R. de Loree, R. Sellars and It. Porteous, found their task too much. Heggy Robertson, of Parnell, impressed by her neat win in the second heat of the women’s 66 2-3yds. Her club-mate, Doris Magee, was staved off in her first heat, and Miss Robertson was unplaced in the final, which went to Dorothy Grant, of Grammar, AI. Smith and M. Farquhar. B. Hanlon and W. Hunt were other good women swimmers. J. Perrin and. It. A. Lane figured in a fierce dead-heat in the novice sprint final. 11. Bruton and T. Lowe, first and second in the breaststroke race, showed nicely-judged style, although the Dominion champion, N. K. Sylow, was not present to worry them. the water polo tussle between W aitemata and Grammar, Waitemata was in much better trim. A youthful star, p. Brownlee, of Mount Albert Grammar School, won the 100yds Grammar boys’ championship in the splendid time of 64 l-ssec. Air. W. Batty was prominent in the control, Air. a. Kronfeld was starter, Mr. 11. Moore was referee, Air. L. Brighton was check starter, and the timekeepers were Alessrs. Kronfeld L Williamson and E. Alaud AlcKenzie. Scorers for Waitemata: Enwright, two goals, and Dr. Pettit, one. Led by Enwright, who showed great judgment, Waitemata constantly attacked.
