MANY SURPRISES AT WOODVILLE
CLEVER'S NURSERY HANDICAP WIGGINS ON THREE WINNERS | (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Wed. The Woodville summer meeting : opened to-day in wet weather. The course was heavy, and recent form failed to work out well. The Riccarton candidate for the Auckland Cup, Hoylake, was not started, the principal event resulting in a dead-heat between Catkin and Mountain Heath, with Catkin unlucky to be beaten. The totalisator handled £13,978, a decrease of £ll only. Mangatua Hurdles Red Bank was sent out a better favourite than Elicit in the Hurdles, with equal support for Lady' Gay and Otlion. A considerable delay was entailed in getting the field under way in the steady' rain,. and when the tapes were finally lifted deluge jumped to the front with Heather Blend, Elicit and Abisogne next in attendance. Passing through the straight Abisogne joined Deluge, with Red Bank, Elicit and Grand National Handy, Heather Blend having lost his position as the result of a faulty jump. Going down the back Red Bank went to the front with Elicit and Grand National in pursuit, and the trio were clear of Deluge as they turned for home. Elicit outpaced Red Bank over the final pinch to win by a good length, Grand National being eight lengths back, Awapuni thus continuing its remarkable run in jumping events by filling the first three placings. Deluge and Lady Gay were next. Trial Plate Connoisseur and Kinross were the defections from the firSt division of the Trial Plate, in which Goodwill was favourite, with Teremoana fairly well supported. Trisogne was smartest to find his feet, to lead across the top from Archeria and Teremoana. Once in line for home Archeria went to the front, and hung on long enough to win by a head from Goodwill, with a gap of two lengths to Mothplane. Teremoana was fourth. Agreeable was the sole defection from the second division, in which Curtsey was preferred to The Warden, with fair support for St. Melba. Wyeford jumped out smartly from Shot Silk, Rambler and St. Melba, and the issue appeared to lie with the leading trio at the distance. Fifty yards from home Delude came up to join issue, and in a fighting finish the late challenger prevailed by a neck from Shot Silk, with Wyeford a neck away. Gambler was fourth, with St. Melba next. During the running Tunbridge fell at the four furlong post, bringing down Imperial Fame and St. Melba, but horses and riders escaped injury. Curtsey was affected by the fallen horses and might do better soon. No explanation could be offered as to the cause of Tunbridge’s fall. Woodville Handicap Hoylake was withdrawn from the Woodville Handicap, and in the absence of the Southerner, Catkin C£sßß) was installed a warm favourite, Mountain Heath (£357) and Discourse (£301) being next in request. Passing through the straight Mountain Heath and Catkin were in the van from Novar, Star God ami Royal Game, but entering the back Roy'al Game ran to the front, while at the four furlong post David Garrick, who had been running in the rear with Discourse, also made a forward move. The order crossing the top was Royal Game, David Garrick and Catkin, with Star God at their quarters. When heads were straightened out for home Catkin shot out, with Mountain Heath in pursuit, and under pressure the latter got up in the last stride to make a dead-heat of it. Royal Game was four lengths back, with David Garrick ahead of DisHad Catkin been shaken up in the last bit he would have won outright, but Mountain Heath finished on strongly. Star God was prominent for over a mile, but finished last. Flying Hack The favourites were defeated in the Hack Flying Handicap, in which Millais (£343) and'Veronese (£314) were better supported than Cloyne (£252) and White Ringlet, who were about equally fancied. White Ringlet was the early leader from Cloyne, Plimmerton, Knightlike, Veronese and Guide Light. Millais improved his position rounding the top, and was up with “White Ringlet, Second Thought and Guide Light as they turned lor home. Millais wrested the lead from White Ringlet at the distance, but Repay came fast on the outside to smother the opposition and win going away by a length, while Cloyne likewise snatched second honours from the favourite just short of the post. Night Witch was fourth, with White Ringlet and second thought right up. Veronese ran outside several horses all the way. and Knightlike was in a lot. of trouble. Both should do better soon. Cloyne would have been much harder to beat had she got clear sooner. Oete Handicap For the sprint The Raider (£488) was preferred to Arrow Lad (£416), with a marked drop to Miss Pat (£286), the last-named having run third to The Raider on the second day at Feilding. Lady Ideal jumped out smartly from Gascony, with Toxeuma ahead of Maui and The Raider, Peneus having been badly left. Gascony and Lady Ideal turned for home together ahead of Toxeuma ahd The Raider, but with heads straightened out Miss Pat came up on? the outside, and maintaining her run went on to win by a length and a-half. Toxeuma just managed to hold off Gascony, who came again in the last few strides, with The Raider ahead of Arrow Lad, Joy King and Maui. Gascony looked exceptionally well and should win soon. Nursery Handicap Hunting Day (£472) was a very warm favourite, with smaller money tor Clever (£260) and Acreline (£193). The youngsters began raggedly. Imperial Guard showing the way out from the barrier to Royal Line and Hunting Day, with Clever and Acreline next, the field stringing out within a furlong. Imperial Guard and Royal Line were just ahead of Hunting Day at the straight entrance, with Clever improving her position, and with heads in line for home the last-named moved up to the leaders on the outside, to hit the front and win by the best part of a length Zarone came from the back to finish in great style on the rails and beat Imperial Guard for second honours by a length.
