Busy Officials Handicappers in the South will be busy men to-day, for weights are due to-morrow for the first days of the Manawatu, Marlon, Wairarapa and Waipukurau meetings. Out of the Cup To Kara was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at 5.20 p.m. yesterday. Jumper Recovers Perl© do Leon, as far as can be ascertained* has recovered his soundness and will be prepared for forthcoming racing. With any luck at all this gelding should prove one of our best jumpers next ’chasing season. More for Te Awamutu The following additions have to be made to the published list of acceptances for the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting:—Pirongia Hurdles: Archeen 9.0, Kaitangi 9.0. Te Awamutu Cup: Mervette 7.1. Waipa Plate: Asmodeus 9.0. Will He Be Ready? Goshawk had his first run along on Saturday morning, but was not out to make time, says a Hastings writer. He has lost that jaded appearance he returned from Trentham with, and now bears a similar appearance prior to that of winning those three handicaps on end. One for Waipukurau Last season, as a two-year-old, Kailipro, the full-sister to Kaiti, galloped very fast. Under P. Neagle at Green - meadows this filly is at present shaping well and promises to be noticeable in the short hack races at Waipukurau on Boxing Bay. First Prince, in the same stable, is also bowling along nicely. Now With the Gallopers Mr. A. J. Hastings, who has built up a reputation as a trotting starter, made his appearance among the gallopers at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday. With small fields in several events, he was not tried out severely, but he marshalled his fields quickly, and secured some excellent starts. Whangarei's Spring Meeting A statement showing a slight credit balance for the spring meeting was adopted by the executive of the YVhangarei Racing Club last evening. It was shown that during the year approximately £3,000 had been ~ expended on improvements, consisting of the members’ new stand and turnstiles. Bred in the Waikato Star Stranger 11, the winner of the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton, is a five-year-old Waikato-bred mare, by Quin Abbey from Glenopal, by Glengowie. She was taken to Canada a few years ago by W. Holmes, along with other horses, for the ex-West Coaster, Mr. Beban. but could not race there. Since her return to the Bominion she has* shown speed in several engagements, and only bad luck delayed her winning turn so long. She is just a useful hack, who may earn some more money, but a Christchurch writer considers six furlongs would be her limit. Kinross for Ellerslie All continuing well, Kinross will go to Ellerslie to compete in the G.N. Berby. This colt’s best showing to date was when he ran third to Toxeuma and Moorgas in the 11.8. Guineas, a performance that in the ordinary course of events would not encourage one to take him North for the abovementioned classic, but as the three-year-olds this season are, so far, of such a poor class, one can be excused for taking a shot at the three thousand pounder with a moderate. Kinross will compete at Woodville to-day, but should he fail to run forward, then no doubt the trip North will not be entertained. A Good Gallop A brilliant gallop was performed by the Railway Handicap candidates, Bright Glow and Silvefmine, over five furlongs at Hawera on Saturday morning. Silvermine was quickest to begin, leading his companion to the two furlongs in 23 h- The pair were on terms at three furlongs, run in 351, coming home in 1.2, with Bright Glow a good neck in front at the finishing-post. Bright Glow had an advantage in the weight, but is improving with each gallop.

His Cup Ride Although Transformer Is assessed at 7.6 in the Auckland Cup, he will, if present arrangements are kept to, carry 7.8 or 7.9, that being the penalty W. C. Wood’s representative will incur to gain the services of jockey L. Manson. who had the winning ride on Transformer in the Alison Cup at Takapuna. In the Paddock Owner-trainer J. Ross has relegated Diamond Queen to the paddock, and she will be allowed to remain there for a lengthy spell. The daughter of Flying Comet has failed to please her owner of late, and it is hoped that the respite ‘from racing will prove beneficial. Now a Free Lance W. Brown, until recently an apprentice attached to IL. and A. Cutts’s stable at Riccarton, is now tackling the game as a free lance. In order that he may secure some engagements for the meeting here on Boxing Bay, Brown has already put in an appearance at Ellerslie. During his term of apprenticeship the Riccarton lightweight—he can go to scale at about 7.3—rode a, number of winners, his chief successes being gained on Rapier in the Wellington Cup, and Comic Song in the Stewards’ Handicap. Wanganui Cup Programme In deciding to maintain the distance for the Wanganui Cup at a mile and three-quarters the Wanganui Jockey Club has taken up an attitude that should earn for it the commendation of owners and trainers, as well as of the racing public generally. The stake attached to the Cup for the 1929 meeting, to be held on Thursday, February 14, and Saturday, February 16, is £9OO, this including the value of a £IOO gold cup. The stake money for the two days of the fixture shows an increase of £6OO, the amount for the 1929 meeting being £4,925. More Carbine Blood Among the live stock landed at Melbourne last week were three yearling fillies and a three-year-old colt on behalf of Messrs. E. M. Pearce (owner of Mollison) and G. Milne. Mr. Pearce’s consignment consists of a yearling filly by the Carbine horse Spion Kop (sire of Felstead, winner of the last English Derby) from Flash of Steel; a yearling filly by Silvern (sire of Silvius, second in the Melbourne Cup, 1927) from Compromise; and a yearling filly, half sister to Pantheon, by Tetrameter from Scotch Rose. Mr. Milne’s colt is by Marten from Jokes Aside. He will be sent to Adelaide after quarantine. Mask’s Latest The fact that Mask can gallop when he has a light-weight in the saddle has been demonstrated more than once in the past couple of seasons, and the son of Limond and Cowl has also proved that he can carry weight. On Saturday morning Mask was clocked to cover a mile, wide out in 1.42 1-5, taking 50 for the first half, records the “Chronicle.” It was evidence that he will be a fit. horse when he competes at the Auckland summer meeting the week after next. With a light-weight up, Lysander was timed to cover five furlongs in a tick under 1.3. As the track was very fast and the conditions conducive to good times, it was apparent that the Railway Handicap candidate needed reminding of his task over the latter stages.
