TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE
Occasional showers and a glimpse i now and then of the sun were the ! weather conditions prevailing for ; training operations at Ellerslie this i morning. Headquarters will be repre- I sented by only two horses—The Lover j and Roman Pearl —at Te Awamutu on J Saturday, and consequently the work- | outs at present are not far removed from the three-quarter pace plane. j Most of the gallops were registered on the course proper (the trestles 25ft out), but number three grass track also had a following. Course Proper The first pair to appear were Lager Rose and King Emerald, who were associated over six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. They were on terms at the end, but King Emerald, who had a slight advantage in the weights, was doing it easier than his companion. With the track providing easy going Lomint was at home, and had no difficulty in fending off Taneriri at the end of seven furlongs in 1.31 4-5, the first Qvo in 26. Lomint beat her companion comfortably by several' lengths, and is working generously just now. War Officer, on the outer, appealed more than Kaiwanga, when this pair finished together at the end of half a mile in 51 2-5. The latter, however, is not so forward as War Officer. Gold Money was not bustled at any part of a six-furlong task to record 1.22, while Jolly Money took a second longer over a similar journey. It is quite likely that he will be allowed to keep his engagement in the Railway Handicap. In Te Awamutu Cup The Lover, one of the two Ellerslie candidates for Waipa, was sent a mile in company with Thursby, the pair showing plenty of speed in the early stages to register 12 for the initial furlong, 36 3-5 for three and 50 for tho first half. As could be expected, they were unable to maintain such a pace throughout, and both were stopping at the end, The Lover, who finished well in advance of Thursby, taking 1.43 4-5 for the mile. Mon Star and Double Mint, who joined in half a mile from home, ran the journey in 53 1-5. Zane Grey led Winsome Boy over half a mile in 52 1-5, but the latter'was not required to exert himself. Pure Tea, a well-moulded two-year-old who has yet to race, strode home from the half-mile post, the last three furlongs taking 40. She may be given an outing at the Christmas carnival. Corinax was not sent against the watch, his task being a mile and aquarter at three-quarter pace. Still, he was timed to run from winning post to winning post in 2.20 2-5, the final six taking 1.24 2-5. Sir Mond and Te Money had nothing between them at the end of half a mile in 52 3-5. Vallar Pleases Vallar and Bombarder, after running the first four of seven furlongs in 50 4-5, eased up to record 1.34. Bombarder secured a break of at least two j lengths at the start, and as he was timed Vallar must have done much better. After trotting a round of the sand, Perception strode from the half-mile peg in 53 4-5. He lias settled down nicely at headquarters. Golden Wedding showed her customary dash when allowed to travel over six furlongs in 1.21, the final five in 1.7 1-5. She is in tip-top order just now, and should continue to show winning form. Lady's Boy and Knight Town were partnered over six furlongs, Bennie, the other member of the team, joining in three furlongs from home, to lead his companions over the final part of the journey, Lady’s Boy finishing near to him to register 1.20 3-5. Bennie, who was under a strong hold, ran his three in 38 1-5. There was little to choose between Lucklaine and Roman Pearl, who slipped over five furlongs in 1.7 3-5. Lido proved too good for Bonny Day at the end of six furlongs in 1.22 2-5, while Catoma and Lady Suzanne sprinted nicely up the straight. Number Three Grass Sir Russell was not pushed to cover half a mile in f?2, while Optimistic took 55 over the same ground. J. Buchanan’s pair, Miss Myrtle and Brampton, separately covered a round at three-quarter pace. Sleepy Sol’s task was over six furlongs in 1.25 3-5. He is weighted lor the Taranaki meeting, but his recent gallops have failed to please his owner, who is averse to making the trip. Archeno and Lineroo were accorded an easy six furlongs. The Jumpers Bizarro (E. Stanway) and Salamander (R. Olive) failed to impress when sent out for a bout over the schooling hurdles. The former unseated his rider at the first fence, while Salamander got in too close at the second, narrowly averting a mishap. They were again asked to negotiate these two fences, but gave only a moderate display. Bizarro then galloped six furlongs on number three, the last five taking 1.5 4-5. Kararnu (H. Dulieu) gave a safe and neat display over a couple of hurdles, subsequently covering half a mile dn the course proper in 55 2-5.
Postponed Again Owing to further rain no play was possible in the Hawke Cup cricket match to-day, and a postponement was made until to-morrow.
