Addressing Rhodes Scholars at the Goldsmiths’ Company luncheon, the Prime Warden, Sir William Jackson Pope, said: “I have visited most of the English-speaking Dominions, but nowhere have I seen more beautiful public parks than in Australia, where the pioneers planned well and farsightedly. The British tradition is symbolised by thousands of oaks and elms, flourishing in antipodean splendour.”
