KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS

The final of a series of euchre tournaments conducted by the Kakahi School Committee attracted a record attendance. Prizes were won as follow: —For the evening’s games, Mrs. Box and Mr. Freeman, sen.; points prizes, Mrs. Allwright and Mr. T. Tucker. * * * The Ilaurimu Basket Ball Club has had a very successful period for its initial season. At the final meeting for the year a review of the position disclosed a credit balance of £9, which is considered particularly good for a new club. Arrangements are in hand for a club picnic daring the summer. The keenness with which the services of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union housekeepers are sought for continues unabated in the Tauraarunui district branch’s area. There are now three of these women in the district, and at the monthly meeting it was reported that all are in constant demand by farmers’ wives in circumstances that call for relief. Two very pleasant social evenings were held in Matiei'e. At a valedictory social at the residence of Mr. Margan, tendered to Mr. Francis, who is leaving the local branch of the Bank of New South Wales, for Christchurch, there was a large gathering of guests. At the residence of Mr. and Mrs. I-lannan a delightful evening was spent in dancing. Musical items were also given. Very successful services were held for the anniversary of the Taumarunui circuit of the Methodist Church, at which the Rev. C. R. Taylor officiated. At the evening service, Mrs. M. Lumley sang “The Lord is Mindful,” and Mrs. and Miss Stamp gave a duet, “AVhen I survey.” An anthem, “And the Glory,” was given by the choir. The Kakahi Catholic Church conducted a very successful social and dance in aid of the funds, the programme being notable for numerous novelty dances that caused a great deal of enthusiasm. Mrs. S. Turley sang, and Mrs. B. O’Brien and Mr. P. Foster won competitions. Messrs. W. Allan and R. Howbotham were M.C.’s, and the Merry Five Orchestra supplied excellent music.
