MINING NEWS
ALB URN lA —The manager reports as follow; “The water is now lowered north end of drive, north hangingwall, Orlando reef, has been taken out for a height of 14 feet by 15 feet in length. The reef here is still pinched and the country rock hard. The winze on the cross leader under the rise has been sunk 4 feet, a total Qf S feet. The reef here aveiagV lo inches wide and carries mineral and silica. All the timbers have been put in from winze on hangingwall of Orlando reef, and the block above the level from the winze to main west crosscut is now ready tor stoping. A start has been made to clean out the drive north on footwall of Orlando reef from the winze. As soon as the level is cleaned out a start? will be made driving north in the, face. The crosscut east from top of rise on the droppei* off the Sons of Freedom reef has been driven 3 feet, a total of 3 feet. The country rock so far here is of a v ery firm class. The crosscut west from top of rise on the dropper off Sons of Freedom reef has been driven S feet, a total of 8 feet. At 6 feet in we cut a reef about 3 feet wide and the quartz broken looks well, but is a little dirty, and I have not washed any of the ore yet as I have to empty the pass of mullock first before sending the quartz out. This reef, I think, will prove to be the main Sons of Freedom reef. I will continue crosscutting for a few feet to make sure of the footwall.” HAURAKI —The manager reports as follows: “The water is now lowered sufficiently to get in the last set of bearers to enable the drawlift being lowered to the 400 ft level, and it is expected to have that level clear of water at the end of next week, when mining operations will be resumed in the seaward face at the point where the gold was got in the Stockwood reef. The Tangye win<;e and drive is clear, and driving is under way to get over the point where connection from the 400 ft level will be made; the distance to complete the rise is about 30 feet. The level from the Palmerston shaft, which is 20 feet below the drive from the Tangye winze, is now clear of water, so the mine is almost clear again.” LUCKY SHOT—The manager reports; “The drive south on the main reef off the bottom of No. 1 winze is now’ out 20 feet. The reef is 4 feet wide, heavily mineralised, and gold can be seen freely in the ore broken out. The rise is up 12 feet. The reef here show’s a width of 2 feet, and is showing gold for the full length of the rise, which is 6 feet long, and picked stone has been secured on several occasions during the week. In the low level the air pipes have been brought in for a distance of 800 feet; another 40 feet of cleaning up will reach the face, and this 40 feet will require timbering.”
