Cup Horses to Run at Woodville

INTERESTING CARD TO-MORROW HOYLAKE AND STAR GOD There are four horses engaged in the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day that have been paid up for in the principal handicap event at "Woodville to-morrow, decided over a ten-furlong course. They are Hoylake, Catkin, David Garrick, and Star God, and no doubt the showing made by at least the last three will decide whether or not they are to b© brought to Ellerslie for the big contest on Boxing Day. Hoylake is certain to come north. David Garrick hails from the same stable as Vertigern and Talisker, but if he wins to-morrow we might see an unusual occurrence—a bracket of three in the Auckland Cup. Catkin may be kept for the Manawatu Cup, unless he shows something good at the meeting under review. Considerable interest will be evinced in the form of Star God. and it is significant that he was not taken out when his stable companion, Star Stranger, was scratched for the Auckland Cup. Both these Stars are by that begetter of stayers, Martian, from Star Lady. Star God was still a maiden when he captured the principal handicap at Napier Park early in the spring, defeating a moderate field. It was nothing remarkable that he should do so, but at the same time it was rather an impressive performance for a maiden. Perhaps the Martian four-year-old. like Hoylake. is a moody customer and requires to be caught right. Apart from this, they can be expected to play no small part in the decision of the Woodville Handicap to-morrow. J. Barry will ride the gi# y. while probably his Cup horseman, A. G. Murray, will be aboard Star God. There are some good sprinters eniged in the Oete Handicap, con.spicuis among them being the consistent Arrow Lad (who will be on his home course) and Gascony, one of the best if anything like back to form, as is reported. The two-year-olds, too, are above the average, among the 14 engaged tomorrow being Hunting Day (twice runner-up to Supremacy in the Avondale and A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, in the latter event his showing being impressive), arid Clever, who has a lot of speed, but had to be eased in her work on account of an injury received prior to the Auckland meeting. In the open seven, the Borough Handicap, there will no doubt be a rush to get on Chelone, who was a certainty beaten in the sprint at Feilding recently, losing a lot of ground at the start, and then getting up third. A great gallop worthy of a better result. The following horses promise to be ; handsomely supported in their engage- I ments to-morrow: Maungatua Hurdles.— Bonhomme and Red Bank. Trial Plate.— Teremoana and Kinross. Woodville Handicap. —Hoylake and Star God. Flying Hack Handicap.— Australis and White Ringlet. Oete Handicap.— Arrow Lad and Gascony.
