LOOKING FOR TROUBLE

VICTORIAN JOCKEYS Because he is the leading rider in Victoria, the suspension for two months handed to W. Duncan by the stewards in Melbourne is unfortunate, but racegoers closely acqi\inted with racing in the Southern capital are not greatly surprised. The laxity allowed the leading riders there had to stop some- here, and the stewards apparently awakened to the fact that, if they desired to keep their racing free from interference and other undesired features, they would have to make an example. For years now', certain riders in Melbourne have had matters all their own way, and the incident at Caulfield

recently, when three of the most prominent jockeys w'ere unseated at the barrier because they tried for a flying start, was enlightening. Do Not Always Fail On many Melbourne courses, they would have got what they were after. The manner in which some riders pull their horses in and out of the barrier with impunity, to gain an advantage, has long called for remedy, and so, too, have the intimidating tactics employed by some of the older riders. Fortunate Before Duncan’s suspension will serve to show that even the leading horseman cannot take matters into his own hands by interfering with other runners, and the sooner some of the other riders are taught a similar lesson the better it will be for Melbourne racing. Duncan was fortunate in escaping suspension during the A. J.C. spring meeting. Had he been penalised then, it would have made a difference of thousands of pounds. The present suspension, however, will be costly enough, for, unless an appeal on his behalf is successful, Duncan will be a spectator throughout the big Flemit»gton racing over the Christmas meeting.
