WAGGING WORLDS
(Written for THE SUN by the Rev. Charles Chandler , Assistant City Missioner.)
While men are deeply engrossed in politics , the world wags on. Like a slighted maiden, with nose upturned and head in air , she passes by such trivialities as we consider to be of the utmost importance. Matters which seem to us of tremendous moment cause the old world no more inconvenience than a wisp of hair in a flapper's face. One jerk o’ the head, and all is well. Stars move in their courses; tides ebb and flow; moons shine; rain falls; and icorlds complete their orbits around their suns, careless of frenzied crews who seem so bent upon mismanagement. A change of government is of 710 more importance than a change in the direction of the wind, and a Prime Minister , to whatever party he belongs , is quite Lilliputian tohen placed against the background of cosmic and eternal verities. Only in proportion to the extent to which we realise our own utter dependability upon God, and our absolute insignificance , can we ever achieve anything for the lasting good of the world. He who would be something of himself must be content to be as nothing. He who would be an instrument in the hand of an over-ruling Omnipotence is the only one who can even hope to wield a lasting influence upon mankind. And so the world wags on, oblivious of the consequential airs of those who , “clothed with a little brief authoritystrut upon the stage of life, but tender and responsive to the touch of a little child , as to a tiny ripple on a sea of j glass t or to the faintest breeze within a mountain gorge. NEXT WEEK : HURRICANE LAMPS.
