NEW SUB-INSPECTOR
POLICE SENIOR-SERGEANT PROMOTED YOUNGEST IN THE FORCE Senior-Sergeant J. Cummings, who has been associated with the Auckland Police Force for 17 years, has been promoted to sub-inspector and will be transferred to Dunedin. By his promotion at the age of 40 years he becomes the youngest commissioned officer in the New Zealand forces. His rapid rise lias been assisted by nis work in the Ponsonby and Pukekawu murder cases in 1920. In both cases Mr. Justice Chapman took opportunity, after the trials, to compliment Mr. Cummings on his work and on the scrupulous fairness that had been displayed toward the prisoners. Mr. Cummings was born at Lawrence, Otago, and joined the police force in 1907 at Wellington. He was transferred to Auckland in 1911 as an acting-detective, and was promoted to a full member of the detective force in 1914. Eight years later he became senior detective, and in June, 1923, became the chief detective for the district. Last December he was transferred to the uniform branch as seniorsergeant. in order to enable him to gain the final experience necessary to his further promotion. His promotion and transfer mean a considerable loss to Auckland.
