BURIED ROMAN CITY

HERCULANEUM UNEARTHED NEW FACTS REVEALED Times Cable. LONDON, Friday. The Rome correspondent of “The Times” says hitherto unknown light on ancient architecture has been furnished by the excavations at Herculaneum. It has been revealed thai the houses in that city were two-storeyed buildings, contrasting with the singlestoreyed house of Pompeii. The upper rooms in Herculaneum were reached by means of wooden staircases. Many contained beautifully-carved wooden furniture which is now in an excellent state of preservation. Digging operations along a road leading toward, the sea disclose the entrances to several patrician villas, but there was no trace of human remains. The inhabitants presumably escaped in boats. Many artistic finds have been made including statues of Mercury, Diana and Apollo, terra-cotta, coloured glass ornaments, and a wooden press for crushing olives, which is identical with those used to-day. The authorities have decided to leave everything where it was found to enable visitors to envisage the daily lives of the inhabitants of the ancient city.
