MUSICAL CONCERT
! The pupils of Miss AI. Shanks, L.A.8., A.S.AI. (pianoforte) and Aliss lv. Rowlandson, B.A. (violin) gave a delightful and interesting recital last evening in the Beresford Street Congregational Hall, in aid of the Leslie Orphanage. The hall was artistically' ! decorated in shades of blue and lemon, i and several bowls of blue and yellow j flowers and asparagus fern gave a i dainty finish to the decorations. : There were five, most effective, twoI piano items: “Poet and Peasant Over- ! ture” (Suppe). “Fingal’s Cave” (Alen- ; delssohn), “Chant Sans Paroles” (Tschaikowsky), “Adieu” (Beethoven), all quartets; and “Second Valse” (Durand) a two-piano duet. Among other items were: “Second Rhapsody” (Liszt), ‘lmpromptu in A fiat, op. 90, No. 4” (Schubert), “Alinuet” (Paderewski), pianoforte solos, and “Andante from Concerto” (Alendelssohn), “The Bee” (Schubert), “Adagio” (Handel), violin solos. Several violin ensemble items were given. A scene, “A Fireside Concert,” in which the younger pupils took part, and a short Troubadour Play, “Linnet of Ladytower,” acted by the intermediate pupils, were greatly appreciated. Certificates were awarded to candidates who were successful in examinations during the year, and prizes were presented to Aloyra Gresham, who gained the highest marks in the theory examination (96 out of a maximum of ! 99) and Spencer Wade, who gained 120 j marks in the practical examination, 1 for which 100 were required to pass.
