A STRANGE ADVENTURE
FLYERS CAUGHT IN TREES MIRACULOUS ESCAPES " SYDNEY, Monday. An extraordinary flying accident occurred to-day near Mittagong, 77 miles south of Sydney. Flying-Officer D. Carroll and a mechanic named Chadwick were en route from Sydney to Melbourne in an airplane- when the machine struck the top of a tree. Chadwick, with a portion of the tail of the plane, was left in the tree, from which he fell 40 feet. Ho sustained injuries to his back and a deep cut on one cheek. The machine continued its flight, but struck another tree and remained among the boughs 60 feet from the ground. The pilot was flung out of his seat, but his feet became wedged in the wreckage o£ the machine and he hung downwards. In that position lie unwound a scarf from his neck and wound it round the tree. In that way he managed to right himself. He then slid to the ground, practically unhurt, and walked two miles for assistance for his companion, who was in a bad condition.
