“Buy N.Z. Goods” will be Slogan of 1929
THE REASONS WHY CAMPAIGN DECIDED ON “Buy New Zealand goods!’’ This slogan has been before the public for years, but there are j ndi( ‘ ’ lions that in 1529 it will be the slogan of the year, and that, when the prouiI kundists have completed their special j effort, the people of the Dominion win , be very fully aware of the reasons whv they should first ask for New Zealand goods. The campaign in Auckland was discussed at a meeting of the Manufacturers’ Association yesterday afternoon. In presenting a special re Pttri advocating more extensive activity next year, the president, Mr. T. FiniT said: “As the years have gone by wj have put aside a little nest-egg. and it appears to us to be now time to try and do a little more for our members than we have done in the past, erch if we use the reserve and our’ nexi year’s income. A new Government i a • coming into office. and everything points to this being the time to launch a campaign. It is time for us to dt» a little mure outwardly than to ru.i the winter show. People know they should buy New Zealand goods" but the fact must be placed before them all the time. “The Publicity Committee recommended an extensive campaign, inducing articles, pictures and advertisements, on blotters, in its official orgiu. and through the Press. It was prtposed that the association should commit itself to an expenditure of ever £3OO from its own funds, and undertake to encourage its members in L scheme involving over £2,000.” Ah the proposals were approved. At another stage in the proceedings a letter was read. It nad been sent by the association to the Chamber of Commerce, in reply to a letter from the chamber asking the association to give what assistance it could to relieving the unemployment position. “If every member of the community would adopt a spirit of patriotism.” remarked the association's letter, “aaii as far as possible, purchase Ne\v Zealand - made goods, employment could be found for practically ail the unemployed. Work could also be provided for a large number of the clildren leaving school each year ” The letter wept on to point out that the total value of New Zealand-matlr goods for 1927 was £ 53,639,571. ar.i the number of employees was si.9o-1. or 1,021 for each million pounds* worth*. Imports for five years had averaged £ 47,806.100, and a very considerablportion of the goods imported could be manufactured in New Zealand. If thd imports were reduced by £ 7,000, 0d# and the goods were made in New Zea - land, work could be found far an additional 8,000. In view of no one knowing what treatment this letter had received ut the hands of the chamber, a memter was deputed to find out. I i
