Exams Begin
Swotting Time Over TOO LATE FOR REGRETS Lamenting the frivolities and wasted times of the year, the dodged nights of “swotting,” more than a thousand students presented themselves with pens, pencils and rulers at the doors of the examination halls this morning. They had to show jcause why they should be given the ranking of “matriculated,” or why they should be placed on the bottom rungs of the professions of law, medicine, engineering, and accountancy. Some were after junior university scholarships to take them to the higher halls of learning without lecture fees, and others were there to show proficiency in dental surgery and in knowledge of music. The majority were young and nervous. A few were middle-aged, but still worrying at the barrier which prevented them from taking a place in their professions. The main centre was the Auckland University College, where 270 students, including 82 girls, sat for matriculation, and 41 were after scholarships. For the accountancy preliminary there were 88 candidates. Scots Hall had given over its streamers and its festive air and was filled with desks and the scratching of pens on paper. Here the Grammar boys, 844 of them, were hard at it, heads down over their work. All the secondary schools are competing for the scholarships. Auckland Boys’ Grammar has 19 candidates, Mount Albert five, Girls’ Grammar five, Epsom Girls’ Grammar six, Sacred Heart four and King’s College two. The examinations will continue until Thursday, December 13, for matriculation, and to Friday, December 14, for the scholarships.
