He has now brought things to a head by robbing a shipmate of his shore-going clothes. Cripps, a seaman from H.M.S. Laburnum, aged 23, pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to stealing clothing and a suitcase valued at £8 3s 6d from Frederick Hardy. Chief - Detective Hammond described Ci'ipps as a nuisance to everybody. Knowing that a shipmate kept a suitcase containing civilian clothing in a private house on shore, he had gone to the house and gained possession of it, pawning both clothes and bag for 421. “Cripps has caused a great deal of trouble,” continued the chief-detective, “and I understand the naval authorities wish to send him back to England.” Cripps was ordered to make restitution of £1 and was handed over to his ship for punishment.
