Killed by Gear Change Failure

CAR OVER BANK OTHERS HURT IN SMASH Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. One passenger was killed and all others injured in a motor-car accident at Plimmerton yesterday afternoon. A roadster driven by Mr. L. White, of 202, The Parade, Island Bay, went over a 10-foot bank. The victims of the accident were: Killed: Miss J. Lewis, photographer, of Aurora Terrace. Injured: Mr. L. White, of Island Bay, abrasions to back and right leg and shock; Miss E. Falconbridge, of 17, Parliament Street, abrasions to right arm and shock; Miss E. Rigby, Ngahauranga, strained right ankle and shock; Mr. A. Scroggins, Taranaki Street, shock; Mr. G. M. Russell, Adelaide Road, shock. The accident occurred about 1 p.m. when Mr. White was driving the car to Plimmerton. As he was climbing a hill near the township he attempted to change from top gear to second, but the gear missed. The car rarf' backward down the hill and over a 10ft bank, coming to rest up-side-down in the bed of a creek. People were quickly on the scene and the victims were taken to Plimmerton and an ambulance summoned, but Miss Lewis was dead before it arrived. The other victims were attended to at Tecoma House by Mr. Barlow, the proprietor.
