BRIGADES KEPT BUSY
FIRES WEEK-END PROPERTY SAVED BY GOOD WORK The City and Suburban Fire "Brigades were called out eight times during the week-end to put out tires in buildings, fires caused by electric cables fusing and grass and gorse fires. , . The most serious occurred last evening in a detached washhouse owned by Mr. A. Foster at o 9 Ireland Street, Ponsonby, and used as a storeroom for paint. The City h ire Brigade was unable to save the building, but it prevented any damage from being done to the house. T-he property was insured for £ 300 in the New Zealand Office. Early yesterday morning an electric cable fused in the shop of Lewis Eady, Ltd., in Queen Street. The City Brigade turned out, and the only damage done was to a bookcase, a piano, a number of music-rolls and the electrical switchboard on the ground floor. Early on Saturday evening a cable under the pavement at the corner of Symonds Street and Wellesley Street fused so that flames came up through the pavement. The City Fire Brigade was called out and prevented any damage from being done. Three grass fires broke out on Saturday. The Remuera Brigade put out two—one in an orchard in St. Mark’s Road and one in an empty section in Waiatarua Road. The third, which occurred in Meola Road, Point Chevalier, was attended to by the Point Chevalier Fire Brigade. Fire broke out in the Auckland City Council’s Depot in Raumati Road on Saturday afternoon, when a workshop was damaged. The Mount Eden Brigade put out the flames before they had spread from the back part of the building. A gorse fire in Quebec Road, Milford, was put out by the use of sacks by the Takapuna Brigade on Saturday afternoon. No damage was done.
